SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Cabrini field hockey team snapped a three-game skid Thursday night, turning a second half rally into a 3-2 come-from-behind win at Swarthmore College. Senior Melissa Benedetti's goal, her second of the contest, mid-way through the second frame provided the Cavaliers with the win.
The Cabrini offense registered 25 total shots, led by seven from Benedetti. Junior forward Desiree Umosella collected six shots. The Cavaliers owned a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Cabrini raced to a one-goal lead at the 8:14 mark, following sophomore Shannon Mulhern's first goal of the season. Benedetti earned the assist after her shot attempt was stopped by Garnet goalkeeper Gina Grubb.
Swarthmore responded, adding two goals before the intermission. Joslyn Young's score on a penalty stroke at the 16:14 mark knotted the scoring at 1-1. Abbe Muller, off a feed from Ashley Gunter, put the Garnet ahead with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.
The Cavaliers wasted no time in the second, tying the game at 2-2 just 118 seconds following the opening whistle. Freshman Maura Gordon's cross was tipped in by Benedetti at the 36:48 mark.
Cabrini secured the game's final lead off a penalty corner in the 53rd minute. After a Cavalier shot attempt fought through traffic, Benedetti deposited the game-winner and her third score of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Donahue totaled six saves in the win.
