RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer team collected 2-1 win against The Catholic University of America Saturday at Edith Robb Dixon Field. Junior Heather Thompson's goal, her second in as many games, with nine seconds remaining in the first half proved to the game winner.
For the second straight game, sophomore goalkeeper Gianna Porretta turned in a season-high performance for the Cavaliers in net. Against Catholic, she tallied 12 saves, including seven in the second half.
Cabrini secured a 1-0 lead at the 34:24 mark following senior Nikki Duggan's second goal of the season. Classmate Jennifer Burke's serve off a penalty corner found Duggan's head in front for the score.
Thompson's goal in the final ten seconds before intermission was set-up by freshman Molly Schwoebel. The rookie carried the ball to the right corner before finding Thompson just inside the box from 12-yards out. The score was Thompson's third of the season, tying junior Sabina DeGisi for the team lead.
Down two goals, the Cardinals turned on the pressure in the second, registering 18 shots versus just six from the hosts. Freshman Caroline Burke, off a feed from freshman Erin Saia, bounced a shot over Porretta's head in the 70th minute, cutting the Cabrini lead in half.
However, the Cavaliers stood tall down the stretch. With less than 15 minutes remaining Catholic twice had chances to tie the game. Burke's header attempt in front went high and a shot from 10-yards out was pushed away by Porretta.
The Cardinals owned a 9-5 advantage in corners, attempting seven in the second frame.
Catholic goalkeeper Tere Rossi tallied nine saves. The Cabrini offense recorded 27 total shots for the game.
DeGisi led the Cavaliers with six shots, while Duggan totaled four.
Cabrini (3-4-0) begins play in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tuesday, September 23 at Edith Robb Dixon Field against Philadelphia Biblical University. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
