Volleyball Captures First Win, Downs Misericordia University, 3-1

The Cabrini volleyball team collected its first win of the season Wednesday night, besting Misericordia University, 3-1, at Nerney Field House.

The Cabrini volleyball team claimed its first win of the 2008 season with a 3-1 victory against Misericordia University Wednesday night in Tom Nerney Field House at the Dixon Center. Junior setter Lizzie Williams paced the Cavaliers' offense with a team-high 31 assists and seven kills.

Freshman Alexis Doss ignited the Cabrini attack with a career-best 13 kills and added four digs. Junior outside hitter Traci Beltz buried seven kills and tallied 11 digs.

Rookie Beth Gillespie totaled six kills and four digs. Sophomore Stephanie Recklau paired a season-high six total blocks, including three solo stuffs, with four kills.

Senior Lindsay Martin led the Cabrini backline, registering a team-high 21 digs. Senior Michelle Mola posted 13 digs.

The Cavaliers opened the match with a convincing 25-16 win in set one. Doss powered the Cabrini offense with four kills, while Williams tallied nine helpers in the win.

After the Cougars evened the match at one game apiece with a 25-23 win in the second frame, the Cavaliers ran off two straight commanding wins, 25-13 and 25-11 in sets three and four, respectively.

Williams guided the Cavaliers with five assists and three kills in the third set. Beltz and Gillespie totaled two kills apiece.

Cabrini clinched the match in the fourth stanza behind four kills from Doss and three each from Gillespie and rookie Danielle Kulich. Williams contributed nine helpers.

Defensively, the Cavaliers presence at the net resulted in a season-best 11 total blocks. The backline combined recorded a season-high 75 digs.

Cabrini (1-4) returns to the road for the first of 10 matches away from Nerney Field House, beginning Tuesday, September 9 against Bryn Mawr College at 7 p.m.
