RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team opened the home portion of its 2009 schedule Friday against unbeaten Stevens Institute of Technology. The Ducks earned a 16-11 win, handing the Cavaliers their second straight loss to begin the season.
Junior attack Erin Nollen and sophomore attack Jaime O'Hanlon keyed the Cabrini offense, each recording four points on three goals and one assist. Nollen claimed three draw controls and O'Hanlon was a perfect 2-for-2 on free position opportunities.
Junior attack Amanda Alexandrowicz continues her early-season success on the offensive end, totaling three points on three scores. Alexandrowicz collected a team-high four draw controls.
Senior midfielder Anna Scholl and freshman attack Jacqueline McDermott each deposited one goal. Scholl also tallied three draw controls.
Senior defender Christina Romano registered a club-leading five groundballs.
Junior goalkeeper Kate Schmid faced a plethora of shot for the second consecutive game. Schmid notched 18 saves against the Ducks and collected four groundballs.
In Cabrini's season-opening 17-6 setback at No. 3 Franklin & Marshall March 4, Schmid tallied 22 saves.
Stevens jumped out to a 6-2 lead with 17 minutes remaining in the first half following junior attack Alyssa Pigott's second score of the contest. Cabrini cut its deficit to three goals, 7-4, after Alexandrowicz buried her second marker of the opening half at the 10:00 mark.
The Ducks closed the first half on a 4-2 run, owning an 11-6 lead at the intermission. O'Hanlon's goal at the 1:01 mark, off a feed from Nollen, pulled the Cavaliers within the five-goal margin.
Stevens opened the second period with three straight scores from sophomore attack Leah Wasserman, claiming a game-high eight-goal lead, 14-6 with 25 minutes remaining.
However, Cabrini responded with four of the game's next five goals, crawling back to within five goals, 15-10, with 10:33 on the clock. O'Hanlon sparked the run at the 14:21 mark. Nollen and Alexandrowicz each struck the twine before O'Hanlon added her third goal of the game.
Stevens' proved to be too much down the stretch and utilized its stall offense in the final five minutes. Wasserman scored her fourth goal of the half with 6:50 remaining. Pigott led the Ducks with seven points on five goals and two assists.
Cabrini head coach Jackie Neary and Stevens head coach Celine Cunningham have met a number of times opposite one another as coaches. However, the history between the two goes back to when the former Division I lacrosse players tangled in the 1984 national championship game. Neary's Temple University team earned a 6-4 victory against Cunningham's University of Maryland squad.
Cabrini (0-2) embarks on an 11-day lay-off before resuming play on the road against the College of Notre Dame March 17. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
