RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team grabbed the upper-hand in the standings of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) on Saturday afternoon, topping rival Gwynedd-Mercy College, 15-8, at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The Cavaliers and Griffins took the field today as the remaining unbeaten teams in conference play.
The senior attack duo of Amanda Alexandrowicz and Erin Nollen powered the Cabrini attack in the win, combining to record 12 of the team's 23 points. Alexandrowicz notched six points with five goals and one assist. Nollen netted four scores and handed out two helpers.
Junior attack Jamie O'Hanlon posted five points, pairing three goals with two assists. Senior attack Danielle Rothermel tallied three points with two goals and one assist.
Senior goalkeeper Kate Schmid totaled 12 saves for her eighth of the season and 46th of her Cabrini career. Schmid also recorded a team-high eight groundballs and caused two turnovers.
Similar to the squad's seven victories coming into today, the Cavaliers success on the offensive end resulted from its command in the draw circle. Cabrini won the draw control battle, 15-9. The Blue & White is 8-0 this season when collecting more draw controls than its opponent.
Alexandrowicz and senior midfielder Lynda Kaufmann led the Cavaliers in the circle, each claiming three draw controls. Kaufmann chipped in with six groundballs.
Today's victory also marked No. 185 in the career of 14th-year Cabrini head coach Jackie Neary.
After Gwynedd-Mercy started the contest with two goals in the opening six minutes, Cabrini ran off nine of the game's next 11 goals and led 9-4 at the intermission. Alexandrowicz sparked the run with the Cavaliers' first two goals of the game. She now needs just six to reach the 200-goal plateau for her career at Cabrini.
Alexandrowicz and Nollen each scored three goals in the decisive spurt. The duo also surpassed 500 career points combined in the victory, now totaling 506 during their time together with the Blue & White.
The Cavaliers led by a game-high eight goals, 12-4, with 16:29 remaining in the second half following O'Hanlon's third score of the contest and 93rd of her career.
The Griffins pulled within six goals, 13-7, with 10:00 remaining, but never closer. Junior midfielder Dolores Weather scored on a free-position attempt for Cabrini's final marker of the game with 58 seconds left.
Junior midfielder Kristie Pollock led the Gwynedd-Mercy offense with four points on two goals and two assists. Junior attack Colleen Dellostretto (2G) and sophomore attack Shannon Carabba (1G, 1A) each posted two points.
Junior goalkeeper Trisha Tinomy made 18 saves for the Griffins in the loss.
The Cavaliers and Griffins last met in the championship game of the CSAC Tournament in 2009. Gwynedd-Mercy is the last conference opponent to defeat the Blue & White, knocking off the Cavaliers, 16-14, nearly one year ago today on April 18, 2009.
Cabrini (8-5, 6-0) resumes its non-conference schedule on the road versus No. 13 Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, April 21. Game time against the Ducks is set for 4 p.m.
