GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team's bid for an 11th Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) title in program history and third straight came to an end on Wednesday night following a 14-12 loss at Gwynedd-Mercy College. Senior attack Jamie O'Hanlon notched six points with six goals for the Cavaliers in the season-ending loss.
Senior attack Gabrielle Gorbey complimented O'Hanlon on the offensive end, tallying four points with three goals and one assist. Sophomore attack Christina Pasquariello posted two points, pairing one score with one helper.
Senior midfielder Dolores Weathers and freshman attack Sarah Means each added one goal. The Cabrini offense out-shot the Griffins, 40-28, for the game overall.
The Blue & White also won the groundball battle, 25-24. Senior defender Courtney Davis scooped three groundballs and collected three draw controls.
Freshman goalkeeper Janel Folkomer tallied nine saves for the Cavaliers. Folkomer started all 17 games between the pipes in her first season at Cabrini.
The Griffins sprinted to a 4-0 advantage and led 5-1 at the 14:25 mark of the first half. O'Hanlon first goal of the game with 6:36 left before the intermission cut the Cabrini deficit to three goals, 6-3.
Gorbey kept the Blue & White within three scores, 7-4, with her second goal of the half at the 2:43 mark. The Cavaliers trailed at halftime, 8-5.
Gwynedd-Mercy (10-7) pushed its lead to a game-high five goals, 10-5, with the back-to-back goals to open the second half.
However, a rally-minded Cabrini team scored three straight and seven of the game's final 11 goals. Means keyed the 3-0 run her lone goal at the 13:33 mark. Weathers capped the spurt and pulled the Blue & White within 10-8 with 12:31 remaining.
After Kirsten Walter reclaimed a three-goal cushion, 13-10, for the Griffins at the 4:24 mark, O'Hanlon netted her fifth and sixth scores of the game, cutting the Cabrini hole to just one goal.
Yet, Jenna Gaydosh's unassisted goal with 1:03 on the clock iced the victory for GMC.
Shannon Carabba led the Griffins offense with six points on five goals one assist. Walter and Colleen Dellostretto notched three points with two scores and one assist.
Trisha Timoney, the CSAC Player of the Year, turned away 20 shots for Gwynedd-Mercy in the victory. The win advances GMC to the conference championship game versus the winner of Wednesday's second semifinal game featuring top-seed Marywood University and No. 5 seed Neumann University.
The loss ends the career of seven Cavaliers, including Davis, Gorbey, O'Hanlon, Weathers, senior defender Julie Bonomo, senior midfielder Francesca Pizzigoni and senior midfielder Gianna Porretta. This senior class has helped the Blue & White to two CSAC titles and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and 2010.
O'Hanlon wraps up a stellar career at Cabrini with 244 career points on 166 goals and 78 assists. She played in 71 career games, totaling 76 groundballs and 50 draw controls.
Gorbey joined the Cavaliers prior to the 2010 season after transferring from Division I Long Island University. She played in 35 career games for the Blue & White, tallying 71 points with 48 goals and 23 assists.
Davis played in 71 games on defense for the Cavaliers, recording 186 groundballs and 143 draw controls. Bonomo aided Davis on the backline the last two seasons, playing in 34 games and scooping 72 groundballs.
Weathers appeared in 68 games at Cabrini and finishes with 43 career points on 25 goals and 18 assists. Pizzigoni's senior season was hampered by an injury, however, she wraps up her time with the Cavaliers with 34 groundballs.
Porretta played three seasons and 23 games with the Blue & White, splitting time between the pipes and as a field player. She played in a career-high 11 games as a senior, making the move from goalkeeper to midfielder.
The Cabrini women's lacrosse team, under the direction of 15th-year head coach Jackie Neary, finishes the 2011 season with a 7-10 overall record.
