RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's lacrosse team fell to 0-3 after falling to the University of Scranton 16-10 today at Edith Robb Dixon Field. Sophomore
Melissa Scanzano matches a career high with five goals to lead the Blue and White on the day.
The Cavaliers fell behind early, as Scranton netted a pair of goals in the game's first five minutes. Freshman
Nathalie Basunga put Cabrini on the board just over six minutes into the action with her third goal of the season. After a Royals goal, the Cavaliers rallied for three unanswered goals to take their first lead of the games.
Goals by sophomore Sara Carzo, scanzano and junior
Bree Thompson handed the Blue and White the lead at 4-3 with 14:43 to play in the opening half. The lead was short lived, as Scranton responded with five consecutive goals, building an 8-4 lead at the half.
Scranton's run continued into the second stanza, as the Royals built their lead to 10-4 with 19:30 to play. Scanzano's unassisted goal at the 15:54 mark broke Scranton's momentum. The Royals wasted little time returning to the Cabrini net as they scored the next three goals, extending the advantage to 13-5.
Goals by sophomore
Lacie Doubet and Scanzano, separated by 22 seconds, pulled the Cavaliers to within 13-7 but the Royals got the goals back, rebuilding the lead to 15-7 with 6:21 to play. Scanzano's fourth tally of the game came with 3:26 to play. The sophomore and Basunga completed the scoring with goals in the final two minutes of play.
Junior
Ali May scooped a game high seven ground balls, while Thompson and Basunga secured four each. The foursome of Basunga, Thompson, May and Scanzano also combined to win eight of Cabrini's 14 draw controls. Junior
Erin McLaughlin forced a game-high three turnovers, as Basunga and Thompson forced two each. Junior goaltender
Janel Folkomer recorded seven saves in the loss.
Sophomore Emily Gross led Scranton (2-2) with five goals and an assist. Junior Kerry Sullivan recorded four goals and a helper. Senior goaltender Kathleen Smart recorded 12 saves in the win.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Ursinus College (1-2). Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
