COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team stumbled to its fourth consecutive loss to open the 2013 season with today's 12-7 loss at Ursinus College. The Blue and White fell behind early and could not recover despite a career high three goals by freshman Katie Lasater.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead as they posted three goals in the game's first nine minutes of play. Lasater put the Cavaliers on the board at the 20:36 mark as she converted a pass from fellow rookie Nathalie Basunga. Ursinus responded with another three goal spurt, extending its lead to 6-1with 6:32 left in the first half. Lasater converted a free position shot with just over three minutes left in the opening half, cutting the deficit to 6-2 at the half.
Ursinus extended its lead to 8-2 with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Sophomore Melissa Scanzano scored the first of her two tallies on the day at the 24:09 mark. After another Ursinus goals, sophomore Lacie Doubet found the back of the net, cutting Cabirni's deficit to 9-4 with 13:42 to play.
Trailing 11-4, the Cavaliers began a late rally, as Lasater, Scanzano and sophomore Sara Carzo netted goals in a span of 2:16, cutting the Bears' lead to 11-7 with 3:33 to play. The Blue and White, however, could not get any closer, as Ursinus added an insurance goal in the final seconds.
Junior Ali May led Cabrini with four ground balls, while Doubet's three draw controls also topped the Cavaliers. Seven players accounted for the Blue and white's seven forced turnovers. Junior Janel Folkomer record 14 saves between the Cabrini pipes.
Nicole Kovacs led Ursnus (2-3) with seven points on five goals and a pair of assists. Amber Moyer added four goals in the win. Goaltender Riley Pembroke secured the win with 11 saves.
Cabrini's search for its first win of the season will continue on Thursday as the Blue and White visits Swarthmore College (4-1) in nonconference action. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
