CHESTER, Pa. – After nine consecutive victories, the Cabrini women's lacrosse team lost its first game in over a month, with today's 19-18 loss at Widener University. The loss drops the Cavaliers to 9-6 on the season.
Freshman
Nathalie Basunga led the Blue and White with a career high eight points and 17 draw controls. The rookie matched a season high with five goals and three assists. Fellow freshman
Katie Lasater posted five points on three goals and two helpers. Sophomore Sara Carzo recorded her second hat trick of the season, while senior
Christina Pasquariello and sophomores
Lacie Doubet and
Melissa Scanzano added two goals each.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead as Lasater opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game. Scanzano's first came 25 seconds later. Goals by Basunga and Carzo gave the Blue and White a 4-0 lead just 4:09 into the action. The Pride roared back with five consecutive goals, taking their first lead at 5-4 with 9:35 left in the first half.
Cabrini fought back late in the half with a rally of its own. Scanzano's unassisted goal leveled the score at the 7:20 mark. Junior
Bree Thompson broke through the Widener defense with 4:27 left in the half, giving the Cavaliers a 6-5 lead. Doubet found Lasater with 3:30 to play for the rookie's second of the period. Carzo and Lasater converted free position chances, extending the lead to 9-5. The Blue and White closed the half with a 10-5 lead after Basunga found Doubet for a score with 43 seconds left.
Widener began to chip away at its deficit early in the second half, scoring two goals in the opening 90 seconds of the half. Goals by Pasquariello and Doubet rebuilt the five goal lead at the 26:55 mark. The Pride added two more goals before Basunga converted a Thompson pass for the 13-9 lead. Three consecutive goals brought the Pride to within 13-12 with 15:09 left on the clock.
Carzo completed her hat trick at the 13:51 mark, giving Cabrini a bit of breathing room. Widener got the goal back just north of the 13 minute mark. Basunga's third score of the evening rebuilt the two goal advantage with 10:53 to play. Three consecutive Widener goals gave the Pride its first lead of the game at 16-15 with 6:22 on the clock.
Basunga tied the score with 4:10 to play, but Widener answered at the 2:33 mark. The Cavaliers turned up their pressure as Pasquariello and Basunga converted free position shots, Basunga's returning the lead to the Blue and White with 91 seconds to play.
Widener controlled the subsequent draw and 15 seconds later, the Pride tied the score. Cabrini won the next draw and created a late scoring chance, but Lasater's shot was saved. The Pride converted its clear before Pinky Schneider netted the game winner with just 12 seconds on the clock. Basunga won the final draw before Doubet was stopped as she prepared for a shot in the final seconds.
Carzo scooped a game high five ground balls, while Basunga and sophomore
Taylor Carroll forced two turnovers each. Junior goaltender
Janel Folkomer recorded 10 saves, including seven in the second half.
While the Blue and White outshot the Pride 46-34, Widener did much of its damage on free position shots. The Pride converted nine of 10 opportunities, while the Cavaliers shot just 4-15.
Julia Costello led the Pride with seven points, including six goals. Mackenzie Lindquist added four goals and a helper in the win. Neyminder Megan Dunn matched Folkomer with 10 saves between the pipes.
Cabrini faces a tough task in returning to the win column, as it closes the regular season with a trip to Ewing Township, N.J. to face No. 9 The College of New Jersey on Thursday. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
