RADNOR, Pa. – On Saturday, the Cabrini women's lacrosse team will make its 16th appearance in the Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game in the program's 17 year history. The Blue and White made its reservation for Championship Saturday with today's 21-8 semifinal win over Immaculata University. The victory improves the Cavaliers to 10-7 on the season and extends the club win streak to 17 games against conference opponents.
The Blue and White displayed a balanced attack as eight players tallied at least one goal. Freshman Katie Lasater posted a career high seven points including a season best five assists. Sophomore Melissa Scanzano recorded her third career five goal game, while senior Christina Pasquariello matched the sophomore's five points. Sophomores Sara Carzo and Lacie Doubet added four points each.
The Cavaliers wasted little time gaining a lead as Scanzano scored an unassisted tally just 46 seconds into the game. The sophomore doubled the Cabrini lead at the 25:43 mark. Lasater netted the Blue and White's next two goal, extending eh lead to 4-0 with 21:45 left in the opening half. The Mighty Macs cut the lead in half at the 20:24 mark with back to back goals.
Cabrini regained the game's momentum with Doubet's unassisted goal. Sophomore Taylor Carroll posted her second goal of 2013 with 13:20 left in the half. Cabrini put some distance between itself and Immaculata with a 52 second flurry, as Carzo, Pasquariello and Doubet found the back of the net to extend the lead to 9-2 with 10:17 left in the half. The Mighty Macs got one of the goals back but junior Bree Thompson and Doubet tallied a pair of unassisted goals, separated by 13 seconds.
Immaculata connected on a free position goal with just under five minutes left in the half before the Cavaliers scored the final four goals of the half. Goals by Pasquariello, Carzo and a pair by Scanzano extended Cabrini's lead to 15-4 after 30 minutes of play.
The Mighty Macs posted a goal in the early minutes of the second half, before the Cavaliers erupted for three more. Freshman Nathalie Basunga netted both of her goals on the day in a three minute span, split by a Pasquariello score. Pasquariello closed her scoring with 13:14 to play, while Scanzano's fifth tally came with just over 12 minutes left. Carzo completed her hat trick with 4:05 left on the clock.
The Cavaliers outshot Immaculata 45-23, including nine Basunga shots and eight by Pasquariello. Cabrini also caused 18 turnovers to the Mighty Macs' two. Basunga also controlled 10 draws and scooped six ground balls. Junior goaltender Janel Folkomer recorded 12 saves to secure the victory.
Sophomore Danielle Lopez led Immaculata (11-7) with three goals and a helper to go with nine ground balls and five draw controls. Junior netminder Nicole Behrndt made 13 saves in the loss.
The Blue and White will play for its second s consecutive CSAC title and 12th in program history on Saturday at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The Cavaliers will host second seed Neumann University (14-4) at 12 Nooon. The Knights topped Marywood University 20-10 in today's second semifinal.
Cabrini scored a 20-8 victory at Neumann on April 9. Trailing 4-3 midway through the first half, junior Ali May scored a game tying goal and sent the Cavaliers on to seven unanswered goals and a 10-5 halftime lead. The Blue and White scored in bunches after the break, never allowing Neumann to get within five goals.
Pasquariello had a career day, scoring eight points including seven goals. Doubet added four goals and two assists, while Carzo recorded a hat trick. Freshmen Rebecca Dolenti and Jordan Hopkins tallied four goals each for the Knights.
