RADNOR, Pa. – It took the Cavaliers 89:20 to score its first goal today but just 3:27 to score its second, as the Cabrini men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 overtime win over Centenary College today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The Blue and White's fourth consecutive win improved the club to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
While neither team found the back of the net in the opening 45 minute period, both teams created solid scoring chances as they combined for nine shots and recorded one corner kick each.
The action went end to end in the second half, as both teams looked for the pass that would put it ahead. The Cyclones were the first to find the right combination as freshman Justin White tallied an unassisted goal in the 78th minute.
Centenary seemed to have the momentum as it earned a corner kick and forced a pair of saves by junior goaltender
R.J. Pino over the next few minutes.
Sophomores
John Underwood and
Mohammed Konneh had solid scoring chances in the 85th minute but both fell short of evening the score.
The Cyclones looked as though they might seal a victory in the 87th and 88th minutes, as they recorded two more shots on goal and another corner kick. Again, the Cabrini defense stood firm.
The Blue and White created one more chance with less than one minute left in regulation, as sophomore
Bobby Kane found his way to a loose ball in the Centenary penalty area, tying the score with just a handful of seconds on the clock.
With the score tied at 1-1 after regulation, the Cavaliers and Cyclones would head to overtime for the second consecutive meeting.
Cabrini controlled the ball for much of the extra time. Konneh took advantage of the possession, playing a long ball to Underwood in the penalty area. Underwood got a touch on the ball before beating Centenary goaltender Jesse Goleman to the loose ball and firing the ball into the empty net for the win.
Both teams recorded 12 shots on the day, led by Kane's four, one more than Underwood.
Pino recorded five saves to earn the victory.
Goleman also tallied five saves for Centenary (6-3-1, 1-1 CSAC).
Prior to today's action, the Cavaliers also welcomed more than 20 former Cabrini men's soccer players back to Edith Robb Dixon Field for the program's annual alumni game.
The Blue and White will hit the road on Tuesday, as it travels down Route 202 to Immaculata, Pa. The Cavaliers will face the Immaculata Mighty Macs (2-8-1, 0-3 CSAC) at 4:00p.m.
