STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - The Cabrini swimming teams competed against Franciscan University and Bethany College today. The men's team fell to Bethany College119-111, while the women's team topped Bethany College 136-57 and beat Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Franciscan University 113-88.
Despite the score, the men's team competed at a very high level. Swimming scores alone, the Cavaliers won 111-87, but the Bethany College diving team was able to boost the final scores to earn the win.
The Cabrini men's team used sweeps in the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard backstroke to spur today's performance.
The men were led by sophomore Hassan David Goines Jr., who won all three of his races. The sophomore scored wins in the 200 yard individual medley, 100 yard breaststroke and 100 yard freestyle.
Sophomore Todd Walker won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.01 and posted a second place finish in the 100 yard butterfly.
Sophomore Bobby Schmidt, classmate Chris Moore and senior Scott Hunt finished first, second and third in the 100 yard backstroke, respectively.
Schmidt and Walker teamed with freshmen Ryan Hagan and Nicholas Vivian, earning a win in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
The women were led by sophomore Christina Melchiorre and senior Morgan Griffith.
Melchiorre finished first in the 500 yard freestyle and finished second in the 200 yard freestyle.
Griffith reached the wall in 26.28 to win the 50 yard freestyle, while finishing second in the 100 yard freestyle.
Freshman Brooke Hagan and sophomore Allie Stein finished second and third in the the 500 yard freestyle, right behind Melchiorre.
Freshman Casey Merrill won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 12:02, while Stein placed second.
Sophomores Sarah Wagner and Moira Prior joined junior Meagan Kalinoski and Hagan to earn a win in the 200 yard medley relay.
The Blue and White will travel to Swarthmore, Pa. to compete in the Swarthmore College Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Friday's action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
