CHESTER, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team used a late rally and nearly overcame a poor shooting first half. But after the 40 minutes, the Cavaliers found themselves on the short end of a 69-58 result at Widener University. The loss drops the Blue and White to 0-2 on the young season.
Junior
Kristina Startare led the Cavaliers with a career high 16 points, including 3-4 from three point range. Freshman
Erin Dodds also connected on 3-4 from deep for 13 points on the night.
Senior
Megan Decker added 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Classmate
Amber Keys matched Decker's nine rebounds, to go with six points.
The Blue and White struggled on the offensive side of the court in the first half, connecting on just 31% of its field goal attempts. By the middle of the first half, the Cavaliers found themselves in a 19-8 hole.
The deficit grew as large as 20 points with 4:39 on the clock, before Cabrini closed the opening stanza on a 13-3 run, cutting Widener's lead to 37-27 at the halftime break.
The Pride opened the second half with a 13-2 spurt, building its lead to a game high 21 points.
Cabrini slowly chipped away at its deficit, eventually cutting the Pride's lead to 61-54 on a Startare three pointer with 4:07 to play.
The junior split a pair of free throws one minute later, further trimming the Blue and White deficit to six points with just over three minutes on the clock, but Widener hit 6-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to seal the win.
For the game, the Cavaliers connected on 33.9% from the floor, including 9-17 from three point range. The Blue and White also forced 21 Widener turnovers, converting them into 16 points.
Brianna Wylie paired 16 points and 14 rebounds for Widener (2-1), while Allison Gallagher scored a game high 18 points.
The Cavaliers will look for their first win of the season on Saturday, when they visit Delaware Valley College (1-2). Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Doylestown, Pa.
