Field Hockey Season Ends with Championship Game Loss

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini field hockey season came to an end this afternoon, as the Cavaliers fell to Gwynedd Mercy University 5-1 in the 2014 Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The Blue and White end the season with an overall record of 13-5, tied for second most wins in program history.

Today's loss also closed the careers of Cabrini's seven seniors, Rachel Antuzzi, Tori Canelli, Taylor Carroll, Karlie Gruccio, Amber Marshall, Danielle Palatano and Lex Setley.

Among the most successful classes in program history, the group has led Cabrini to 44 wins, including a 25-3 mark in conference games and four consecutive appearances in the CSAC championship game.

The Cavaliers mustered six shots on the day, all on net, while the Griffins recorded nine, with seven coming on net.  Gwynedd Mercy also recorded six penalty corners to Cabrini's five.

Gruccio led Cabrini with two shots, while four others tallied one each.

The Griffins took an early lead, as Championship Game MVP Stephanie Bacho scored the first of her three goals in the 15th minute.  The score remained 1-0 through the halftime break.

Less than one minute into the second frame, sophomore Taylor Mack's cross found Gruccio in front of the Griffins net for the game-tying goal, Gruccio's 14th of the season.

The Griffins regained the lead less than 90 seconds later and never looked back, tallying four second half goals.

Gwynedd Mercy (15-5) also earned the CSAC's automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
