Second Half Spurt Keys Men's Basketball Win over Neumann

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team used a strong second half to open its 2014-15 Colonial States Athletic Conference schedule with an 81-60 victory over the visiting Neumann University Knights.

The Cavaliers used a decisive 29-2 spurt in the second half to improve to 4-3 overall.

Senior Vinny Walls paired 26 points with a career high 11 rebounds to lead Cabrini to the victory.  The senior knocked down a career best 7-10 from three point range.

Fellow senior Aaron Walton-Moss added 16 points and 11 assists, while sophomore Sean Mayo grabbed a career high 10 rebounds.

Senior Howard Blake III was a key to the second half spurt, as the senior reserve scored 11 points in just nine minutes of action, including 3-5 from three point range.

The opening 20 minutes of play remained tight, as evidenced by six ties and seven lead changes.  Neither team could extend its lead to more than five points.  Both defenses held the opposition to under 35% shooting from the floor, as Neuman held a slim 35-34 lead at the half.

The Knights came out of the break on fire, as they used a 10-2 run to extend their lead with 45-36 with 16:14 to play.  A Cabrini 30 second timeout refocused the team before a Walton-Moss three pointer sparked the Blue and White run.

Over the next seven minutes, the Cavaliers took complete control of the action.  A Walls' triple at the 14:08 mark put Cabrini ahead to stay.  Blake's three pointer, with 9:43 on the clock, put the Blue and White ahead 65-47.

Walls and Blake combined for 20 points of Cabrini's 26 points during the seven plus minute run.

Neumann got as close as 68-56 with 6:25 to play, but the Cavaliers responded with a 13-1 spurt to extend the lead back to 24 points.

After struggling to find its shooting touch in the first half, Cabrini connected on 50% of its second half field goal attempts, including a scorching 10-17 from three point range.

Freshman Robbie Brosh connected on three three pointers for nine points, while fellow rookie added seven points and six boards off the bench.

DeShawn Lowman led Neumann (4-3, 1-1 CSAC) with 17 points, while Tyreek Riddick added 12 points.  James Butler grabbed a game high 13 rebounds in the loss.

The Cavaliers will hit the road on Saturday, as they visit Centenary College (3-3, 2-0 CSAC).  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. in Hackettstown, N.J.
