RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team opened its 2014 season with a visit from Haverford College. After falling behind early, the Cavaliers rallied, but in the end fell short 18-12.
Sophomore
Katie Lasater led the Blue and White with four goals on the day, while freshman
Sasha Wozniak tallied a hat trick in her first collegiate game. Senior
Bree Thompson added three points on a goal and two assists.
The Fords jumped out to an early lead, scoring just 60 seconds into the game. The Cavaliers settled down but three more early goals put the Blue and White in a 4-0 hole midway through the opening half. Cabrini rallied with three goals in the next four minutes, as Thompson, Lasater and Wozniak found the back of the net.
Haverford extended its lead back to two goals at 5-3 before Thompson found Lasater with 7:37 to play before halftime. Two more Fords goals built a three goal cushion but the Cavaliers waited little time in responding. Junior
Melissa Scanzano won the ensuing draw and headed straight for an unassisted goal. With 73 seconds left in the half, Thompson found Lasater to complete her hat trick, cutting Cabrini's deficit to 7-6.
Just as it looked like the Blue and White would carry some momentum into the half, Haverford converted a late turnover into an 8-6 lead with 12 seconds to play in the period.
The teams exchanged goals through the first 9:14 of the second half, including goals by Lasater and Wozniak, but leading 10-9, the Fords netted three unanswered goals to build a 13-9 cushion with 17:44 to play.
Goals by Scanzano and junior
Lacie Doubet cut the deficit in half with 14:46 on the clock, but another three goal spurt gave Haverford a five goal cushion.
Scanzano matched Thompson with three points on two goals and an assist, while Doubet finished with a pair of goals. Senior
Erin McLaughlin scooped five ground balls, while senior netminder
Janel Folkomer tallied 15 saves.
Freshman Sarina Manetta led Haverford (1-0) with four goals in the win.
The Blue and White will face Japan's Meiji University in an exhibition on Thursday night following the Cabrini men's lacrosse game at Edith Robb Dixon Field. Following their annual Spring Break training trip to Florida, the ladies will return to action when they host Ursinus College on March 10. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
