RADNOR, Pa. – After two tough losses to open the 2014 campaign, the Cabrini women's lacrosse team scored its first win of the season today at Edith Robb Dixon Field, topping Widener University 15-13.
Freshman
Sasha Wozniak the Cavaliers with a career best eight points, including seven goals on the day. Junior
Lacie Doubet, who has now scored in 35 of her 41 career games, added three goals and an assist.
The Pride jumped out to an early lead, recording the game's first two goals. Doubet and Wozniak opened the scoring for Cabrini, tying the score with 21:009 left in the half. Following a Widener goal, the Blue and White notched four unanswered goals to build a 6-3 lead. Freshman
Allie Vallen sparked the run with her first career goal, followed by goals from Doubet, senior
Sarah Means and Wozniak.
The Pride cut the lead back to 6-4 before Wozniak struck again, this time for a pair of unassisted goals. Two Widener scores sandwiched Doubet's third of the day, as Cabrini took a 9-6 lead into the halftime break.
The Pride responded early in the second half, scoring four of the first five goals scored in the half and evening the score at 10-10 with 18:29 to play. The Blue and White had an answer as junior
Melissa Scanzano scored the first of her two goals in the half, followed by goals from senior
Bree Thompson and Wozniak, rebuilding a three goal lead at 13-10 with 13:39 on
the clock.
Widener snapped the three goal run but Wozniak and Scanzano expanded the Cavaliers' advantage to 15-11 with 3:42 to play, as both connected on free position shots.
Cabrini outshot Widener 41-30 on the day, including a 29-20 advantage in shots on goal. Wozniak led the Blue and White with 12 total shots, including 11 on target, while Scanzano and Doubet fired nine each.
Thompson scooped a career high nine ground balls and joined Wozniak, Thompson and senior
Erin McLaughlin with three draw controls each. Scanzano's four draw controls led the club. Junior
Megan Decker caused four turnovers in her first action of the season, one more than Thompson. Senior goaltender
Janel Folkomer recorded seven saves to earn the victory.
Junior Megan Granata led the Pride (0-3) with four goals and an assist, while senior Amy Albano and junior Mackenzie Lindquist paired two goals and two assists each.
Cabrini will return to action on Wednesday as it opens Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a visit from Notre Dame (Md.) University. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
