RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team used a dominant first half to win its fifth consecutive game, topping Swarthmore College 17-9 tonight at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The victory improved the Cavaliers to 5-2 on the season and marked the club's first win over a Centennial Conference foe since April 8, 2009, a string of 15 consecutive losses.
Junior
Lacie Doubet led the Blue and White with six points on four goals and two assists. Freshman
Sasha Wozniak added five goals, while junior
Melissa Scanzano matched Doubet with four goals. Senior
Bree Thompson added four points in the win, pairing two goals and two helpers.
The Garnet opened the scoring but it didn't take long for the Cavaliers to grab the game's momentum. Scanzano opened Cabrini's scoring with an unassisted goal at the 25:40 mark. Thirteen seconds later, Doubet gave the Blue and White a lead it would not relinquish.
The trio of Scanzano, Doubet and Wozniak combined for seven unanswered goals. Thompson's first goal of the day came 3:17 before the half and extended the lead to 8-1 after 30 minutes.
The scoring run extended to 10 unanswered goals as senior
Sarah Means and Doubet scored in the opening five minutes of the second half. The Garnet snapped the scoring streak with 22:18 left, but freshman
Jessica Breuning got the goal back 11 seconds later, giving Cabrini an 11-2 lead.
Swarthmore mounted its comeback with five consecutive goals, cutting the Cavaliers advantage to 11-7 with 12:20 to play. It didn't take long for the Blue and White to regain the game's momentum, as Wozniak's goal with 10:44 to play snapped Swarthmore's scoring run and sent Cabrini on a four goal spurt.
Over the next 3:37 Cabrini put the game away, as Doubet, Thompson and Wozniak found the back of the net, extending the lead to 15-7 with just over seven minutes left on the clock.
Thompson scooped a career high 10 ground balls in the win, to go with her two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Wozniak controlled five draws, while Scanzano grabbed six ground balls.
Senior
Janel Folkomer scored the victory after recording eight saves, causing three turnovers and three ground balls.
Senior Corinne Commi led the Garnet (6-2) with five goals, while fellow senior Emma Sipperly added three goals in the loss.
Cabrini will take a few days rest before returning to CSAC play with a trip to Allentown, Pa., where it will face Cedar Crest College (0-4, 0-0 CSAC). Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
