Women's Lacrosse Turns Four Goal Deficit into 14-12 Win

Box Score

RADNOR, Pa. – After trailing 8-4 at the half, the Cabrini women's lacrosse team rallied for a 14-12 victory over the visiting Colorado College Tigers this afternoon at Edith Robb Dixon Field.  The victory snapped a two game losing skid for the Blue and White and improved the club to 10-4 on the season.   The win clinches a 17th 10 win season  for the Cavaliers in the program's 18 year history.

After a quiet first half, junior Melissa Scanzano took over in the second half, recording a career high six goals. Five of her goals came in a seven minute span of the second half that helped turn the game around.  Fellow junior Lacie Doubet added two goals and an assist, while seniors Suz Gennaro and Bree Thompson joined sophomore Caitlyn Poole with two goals each, marking career highs for Gennaro and Poole.

Scanzano and senior Erin McLaughlin secured three draws each, while Thompson and senior goaltender Janel Folkomer scooped four ground balls each.  Scanzano and freshman Jessica Breuning accounted for four of Cabrini's 12 caused turnovers.  Folkomer earned the victory after recording 11 saves on the day.

The Tigers took control of the game in the early minutes, as they scored the game's first four goals in the opening eight minutes.  Thompson's unassisted tally with 19:21 left in the half put the Blue and White on the board.  A Colorado goal at the 16:48 mark extended the lead back to four but Thompson returned to the score sheet 15 seconds later with her second unassisted goal of the half.

Colorado added another goal at the 14 minute mark but again Cabrini had an answer.  Doubet's first goal of the day 24 seconds later and Scanzano's goal with 10:35 left in the half cut the Blue and White deficit to 6-4.  The Tigers regained the game's momentum with a pair of goals in the final minutes of the opening half, taking an 8-4 lead into the half.

Head coach Jackie Neary and her staff refocused the Cavaliers during the break and a new team took the pitch for the second half.  After not playing in the first half, Poole saw her first action of the game as she stepped to the eight meter line and converted a free position shot, sending Cabrini on a string of eight unanswered goals.  Forty seconds later, Scanzano added her second goal of the day, while Poole's second came at the 24:14 mark.

If she hadn't already done so, Scanzano put her signature on the game over a span of 2:16.  The junior scored four consecutive goals during that time, tying the score at 8-8 with 21:32 to play.  By the 19:16 mark, the Blue and White had established an 11-8 lead and seized control of the game.  Cabrini's scoring run came to an end with 16:54 to play on Suz Gennaro's woman-up goal, her first of the season.

The Tigers netted a pair of goals to cut the Blue and White advantage to 12-10 with 9:13 on the clock, but Doubet and Gennaro posted unassisted goals at the 7:29 and 2:50 marks to seal the victory.

Madeline Scherer and Madelin Pitkin recorded four goals each for Colorado (13-4), who suffered its first loss in its last eight contests.  Sadie Cole added three goals.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, as they close CSAC play with a visit from Rosemont College (5-8, 2-4 CSAC).  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
