RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team completed a Colonial States Athletics Conference championship three-peat with today's 21-8 victory over Neumann University at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The Blue and White improves to 13-5 on the season, marking the team's most victories in a season since the 2008 campaign.
With the victory, the Cavaliers earn the CSAC's automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers and head coach
Jackie Neary have now won 13 CSAC titles in the 18 year history of the program.
Senior
Bree Thompson was named the game's Most Valuable Player after recording three goals, an assist and five ground balls. Fellow rookie
Sasha Wozniak matched a career high with five goals to go with four ground balls and two draw controls. Freshman
Jessica Breuning and junior
Lacie Doubet added five points each, on four goals and an assist, while junior
Melissa Scanzano matched Thompson's three goals.
The Blue and White jumped out to an early lead as Breuning opened the scoring just obver three minutes into the game. Fellow rookie
Allie Vallen netted an unassisted goal two minutes later and the Cavaliers were off and running. Scanzano scored her first of the day before Breuning completed her hat trick with 22:18 left in the game, extending the lead to 5-0.
Neumann temporarily stopped the run with its first goal of the afternoon, but Cabrini responded with six unanswered goals over the next 14 minutes. Five players scored during the run, including two goals by Doubet and Wozniak. Following Neumann's second goal of the day, Thompson and Wozniak scored in a 60 second span late in the first half, sending Cabrini into the half with a 13-2 lead.
The Knights made a run early in the second half, outscoring Cabrini 5-1 to climb within 14-7 with 18:18 on the clock. The Blue and White again had a response, as Thompson, Wozniak, Scanzano and senior
Sarah Means scored unassisted goals in the next three minutes to extends the lead back to 18-7.
Statistically, the win marked a season high for the Cavaliers in goals, points, shots, shots on goal and ground balls, while its 18 caused turnovers were its second highest of the year. Erin McLaughlin secured six each. Decker also tied a career high with four caused turnovers, as Scanzano and McLaughlin won four draws each.
Senior goaltender
Janel Folkomer recorded three saves to record her career high 13th win of the season.
Senior Koula Gregor and freshman Gabbey Murray led Neumann (12-5) with three goals each, while senior goaltender Sam Kotowski recorded 16 saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers must now wait until Sunday to learn their 2014 NCAA Tournament fate.
