Volleyball Sweeps Widener in Home Opener

RADNOR, Pa. – It took some major rallies, but the Cabrini volleyball team snapped its longest losing streak in six years with tonight's 3-0 sweep over the visiting Widener University Pride in Nerney Field House.  The Cavaliers' 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 victory improved the club to 2-3 on the season.

The Blue and White fell behind early, as Widener scored the first three points of the match.   The deficit grew to 10-5 before Cabrini slowly began to chip away.  An 8-2 spurt, keyed by a pair of service aces by freshman Chelsea Jones, gave the Cavaliers a 17-15 lead.  The Pride rallied to take an 18-17 advantage before senior Amy Guarino's serve led to four consecutive Cabrini points en route to the 25-20 win.

Cabrini wasted little time taking control of the second set, scoring eight of the set's first nine points.  The Cavaliers netted seven consecutive points on serves by junior Cassidy Koenig to build an 8-1 advantage.  Widener battled back, closing the gap to 15-13 before the Blue and White rattled off 10 of the set's final 12 points.

The Pride controlled much of the third set, establishing an early 7-3 lead.  The cushion ballooned to 15-9 when Cabrini began its comeback.  Three consecutive kills by junior Christine Ingargiola gave the Blue and White its first lead of the set at 18-17.  Widener responded with two straight points before a 5-0 Cabrini run put the Cavaliers up 24-20.

Six of the eight Cavaliers who saw action tonight recorded at least five kills, led by Guarino and freshman Anne-Marie Jones with eight each.  Ingargiola and fellow junior Jen Grenauer added seven kills each.

Sophomore Kelly Guarino tallied a match high 19 digs, while Amy Guarino and sophomore Nicole Sokolovich recorded eight each.  Koenig directed the attack to the tune of 34 assists on the night.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, as they travel to the nation's capital for the Catholic University Guetle Invitational.  Cabrini will face Marymount University (4-0) and New Jersey City University (0-2) on Saturday before facing Randolph College (3-1) and the host Catholic (4-0) on Sunday.
