RADNOR, Pa. – The game came down to the final seconds, but in the end, the Cabrini men's basketball team came out on the short end of a 95-93 loss to Keystone College tonight at Nerney Field House.
The loss snaps the Cavaliers' three game win streak and drops the club to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Four Cavaliers scored in double-figures, led by senior
Aaron Walton-Moss, who posted 29 points, five rebounds and 10 assists. Freshman
Jair Green added a career 22 points to his nine boards.
Fellow rookie
Tyheim Monroe recorded 13 points, six rebounds and four steals, while senior
Howard Blake III tallied 10 points.
The game was tight from the opening whistle, as evidenced by 13 lead changes and nine ties, with neither team leading by more than eight points.
With both teams playing solid first halves, the Giants built a 46-42 halftime lead on the strength of 11 first half three pointers. While the Cavaliers shot 51.6% from the floor, 11 of Keystone's 16 first half field goals came from beyond the arc.
The second half player out much like the first, with both teams exchanging leads, until Cabrini used a 9-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the night at 77-69 with 6:30 to play. Following a pair of Walton-Moss free throws with 5:25 on the clock, Keystone stormed back with a 15-2 run to build an 86-81 cushion with 2:52 to play.
A Monroe three point play cut the lead back to three pointer before the Giants connected on their 19th three pointer of the night. The Blue and White wasn't done as lay-ups by Green and sophomore
Ryan Charity pulled Cabrini within 90-88 with 18 seconds to play.
Following a pair of Keystone free throws, Walton-Moss pulled the Cavaliers back to within two points. Two more Giants' free throws pushed the lead back to four points before Walton-Moss connected on a 25 footer with just seconds remaining to pull the Cavaliers to 94-93.
Keystone split its final pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds to play before Cabrini's final attempt to tie the score missed the mark.
While Cabrini shot 52.9% from the floor, its second highest percentage of the season, it allowed Keystone to shoot 51.4% from three point range. The 19 made three pointers marked Keystone's season high and the most the Cavaliers have allowed since surrendering 16 against Marymount in 2009.
Senior Duncan Lunsford and junior Tyreek Peeples accounted for 11 of Keystone's (4-10, 4-4 CSAC) three pointers, combing for 46 points and 13 assists.
Tonight's game also marked the second annual Cabrini Nation Night: #DoBlue event, sponsored by Cabrini Traditions. Both the Cabrini women's and men's teams wore their blue uniforms in front of the home crowd. Special commemorative #DoBlue t-shirts were also handed out to the first 100 students at tonight's game.
The Cavaliers must regroup quickly as they will travel to Gwynedd Valley, Pa. on Wednesday to face Gwynedd Mercy (9-6, 4-4 CSAC). Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
