GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – For the third time this season, the Cabrini men's basketball team suffered back to back losses, as the Cavaliers fell to Gwynedd Mercy tonight 85-70.
The defeat dropped the Cavaliers to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. The eight losses mark the most the team has suffered since a 22-8 campaign in 2008-09. It also marks the Blue and White's first loss to the Griffins since the 2009 CSAC Championship game.
Four Cavaliers scored in double figures, led by freshman
Tyheim Monroe's 24 points and 11 rebounds. Junior
Ace Henry hit four three pointers for 12 points off the bench.
Fellow rookie
Jair Green added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots, while senior
Vinny Walls chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
The Cavaliers fell behind early, as the Griffins built a 21-10 lead just eight minutes into the action. The deficit grew to 16 points late in the opening stanza before the Blue and White closed the half on a 13-2 run to close within 41-36 at the half.
Cabrini scored the first five points of the second half to tie the score. Minutes later, a pair of Monroe buckets gave the Cavaliers their first lead of the night at 46-44. The lead was short-lived as the Griffins responded with a 13-4 run to reestablish its seven point cushion.
A Henry triple again tied the score with 10:12 to play but Gwynedd Mercy again had an answer, regaining its lead with a 12-2 run.
Cabrini held the Griffins to just three field goals over the final seven minutes, but Gwynedd Mercy connected on 10-13 from the free throw line during that span to seal the win.
Senior
Aaron Walton-Moss finished with eight points, eight rebounds and 11 assists.
Cedric Ellerby led five Griffins (10-6, 5-4 CSAC) in double figures with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
The Cavaliers will look to rebound on Saturday, as they visit Immaculata (8-8, 6-3 CSAC). Tip is slated for 3 p.m.
Immaculata rallied from a nine point deficit in the final 90 seconds and hit the game-winning three pointer in the final seconds to down the Blue and White 85-84 on Jan. 7.
