Men's and Women's Swim Teams fall at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -
The Cavalier swimming teams were back in action this afternoon as they made their way over to Swarthmore, Pa. to take on Swarthmore College. The women's team lost 139-91, while the men fell 153-82.

 

Sophomore Christina Melchiorre led the Blue and White once again, winning all three of her races and setting a new school record in the 500 yard freestyle. 

 

Melchiorre scored a final time of 5:30.13 in the 500 yard freestyle, topping Kelly Cotton's previous school record of 5:33.03 set back in 2008. The sophomore also added wins in the 50 yard freestyle and 200 yard individual medley in 26.23 and 2:30.71, respectively. 

 

Senior Morgan Griffith, sophomore Allie Stein and freshmen Brooke Hagan and Stefanie Barkofski combined for a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay, reaching the wall in 1:53.30. 

 

Barkofski also earned a win in the 100 yard butterfly, completing the race in 1:13.79.

 

Freshman Casey Merrill, junior Meagan Kalinoski and sophomore Bella Badolato earned second place finishes in the 100 yard backstroke, 200 yard breaststroke and 200 yard individual medley, respectively. 

 

Merrill finished with a final time of 1:08.05, Kalinoski reached the wall in 3:05.59 and Badalato in 2:51.15. 

 

Sophomore Hassan David Goines Jr., freshman Nicholas Vivian and sophomore Bobby Schmidt led the Blue and White men with a combined three victories. 

 

Goines scored a win in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:04.17. Vivian earned a victory in the 100 yard butterfly in 59.47, while Schmidt added a win in the 200 yard individual medley, reaching the wall in 2:16.80.

 

Sophomore Todd Walker finished second in the 100 yard backstroke, earning a final time of 57.74. Freshman Rich Giuliani placed second in the 100 yard freestyle in 51.33.

 

Freshman Brian Jordan earned a second place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:30.60, while junior Christopher Ryan finished second in the 100 yard butterfly in 1:01.98.

 

Giuliani, Vivian, Walker and freshman Ryan Hagan finished the meet off on a high note, winning the 200 yard freestyle relay and reaching the wall in 1:35.37.

 

The Cavaliers are back in action Saturday when they host Ocean County College at the Dixon Pool. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
