RADNOR, Pa. – Despite holding a nine point lead with less than 90 seconds to play, the Cabrini men's basketball team fell to 6-6 after tonight's 85-84 loss to Immaculata at Nerney Field House.
The loss drops the Cavaliers to 3-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, while the Mighty Macs improve to 6-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the conference.
Senior
Aaron Walton-Moss nearly notched his third triple-double of the season, recording 18 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots before fouling out with 1:18 to play.
Freshman
Tyheim Monroe added 17 points, while senior
Howard Blake III and freshman
Jair Green scored 12 points each.
Neither team could establish a consistent rhythm in the opening 20 minutes, a period that featured five lead changes and six ties. Neither team led by more than five points, until a three pointer by sophomore
Ryan Charity gave the Blue and White a 39-33 lead with 38 seconds before the half.
The Cavaliers maintained a slim lead early in the second half before briefly went ahead 52-51 with 13:45 on the clock. Cabrini responded with an 16-5 run, punctuated at the 4:58 mark as senior
Vinny Walls found Green for a one handed dunk to put the Blue and White up 76-64.
The Mighty Macs continued to chip away at Cabrini's lead, cutting its deficit to 80-71 when Walton-Moss picked up his fifth foul.
The Cavaliers struggled over the final 78 seconds of play, hitting its lone field goal attempt, splitting a pair of free throws and recording a pair of turnovers. Conversely, Immaculata went 4-5 from the floor, including a pair of three pointers, and 4-4 from the free throw line.
Consecutive Cabrini turnovers led to Immaculata buckets, as the Mighty Macs tied the score at 82 with 16 seconds to play. On the Cavaliers' next possession, Monroe found Charity for a fast break lay-up to put Cabrini back in the lead with 11 seconds left.
Immaculata hit its final bucket of the night with just south of five seconds on the clock, providing the winning margin. Cabrini took the ball the length of the court in the final seconds, but its game-winning shot attempt fell short.
While both clubs shot over 51% in the second half, Immaculata hit 8-15 from three point range after the break and connected on 21-28 from the free throw line, while Cabrini converted just 17 of its 30 trips to the line, including 9-17 in the second half.
Junior Ron Melton scored 24 points to lead five Mighty Macs in double figures. Sophomore Roy Ferrell, Jr. added 16 points, while senior Mamadou Diakite paired 11 points and 12 boards. Sophomores Matt Simon and Mike Griffin tallied 11 points each, including a combined 6-13 from three point range.
The Cavaliers will look to rebound on Saturday, as they welcome Cairn University (0-10, 0-4) to Nerney Field House. The game will begin at approximately 3 p.m. as the second half of women's and men's doubleheader.
