RADNOR, Pa. - The Cabrini men's and women's swim teams open their 2015-16 seasons today, as they travel to Scranton, Pa. to compete in a tri-meet against Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham and the University of Scranton.
Returning for the Blue and White women's team is junior Christina Melchiorre and sophomore Casey Merrill, who led the team to a second place finish at last year's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships in Grove City, Pa.
Last season, Melchiorre set program records in the 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 yard freestyles. On top of Melchiorre's individual performances, the junior also helped set school records in the 400 and 800 yard freestyle relays.
Melchiorre was also named to the All-AMCC First Team after scoring wins in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle and 800 yard freestyle relay at the season-ending AMCC Championships.
Merrill was named AMCC Newcomer of the Year after a stellar rookie campaign. The sophomore broke school records in the 1,650 yard freestyle and 400 yard individual medley. Merrill also helped set program records in the 200 and 400 yard medley relays and 800 yard freestyle relay.
Merrill will look to keep the pace this season after earning All-AMCC First Team honors in the 400 yard individual medley, 1,650 yard freestyle and 800 yard freestyle relay. The sophomore was also named ECAC Rookie of the Week last December.
Juniors Todd Walker and Hassan David Goines Jr. return to lead a men's team that finished third at last year's AMCC Championships.
Walker is coming off a season in which he broke six individual school records and helped set two more. The junior set the bar following his performances in the 200, 1,000 and 1,650 yard freestyles, 100 and 200 yard backstroke, 200 yard butterfly, 800 yard freestyle relay and 200 yard medley relay.
Walker was named to the All-AMCC Second Team after placing second in the 100 yard butterfly, 1,650 yard freestyle and 800 yard freestyle relay in last year's conference championship meet.
Goines helped set program records in the 800 yard freestyle relay and 200 yard medley relay. At last year's AMCC Championships, Goines was named to the ALL-AMCC Second Team after placing second in the 800 yard freestyle relay.
The junior was named AMCC Swimmer of the Week on January 26 and was also named to the conferences' Best of the Rest list.
Today's tri-meet against Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham and the University of Scranton is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
