RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to nine matches today, as it scored a 2-1 victory over the visiting Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins.
With the victory, the Blue and White improved to 11-1-3 overall and 5-0-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. With three regular season matches remaining, the Cavaliers hold a one point lead over Centenary for the top spot in the conference standings.
After a scoreless opening 45 minute of play, freshman
Jared Irwin put the Cavaliers on the board in the 54th minute, as the rookie dribbled through a few Griffins defenders before bending a shot inside the far left post.
The Blue and White extended the lead in the 71st minute. Cabrini strung a slew of passes together on the right side of its offensive third before a cross found junior
John Underwood. Underwood headed the ball into the center of the six-yard box, when sophomore
Ben Roda fired a shot just inside the cross bar.
The Griffins got back into the match in the 78th minute when senior Sheldon Fogle collected a loose ball and found freshman Joe Dellobuono.
Cabrini maintained its lead, as it held Gwynedd Mercy to just one shot in the final 22 minutes of action. The lone shot came at the buzzer, forcing the Blue and White's junior goaltender
C.J. Serratore to make one of his two saves on the day.
The Cavaliers outshot the Griffins 18-9 on the day, with Irwin posting a match-high four shots with five Cavaliers notching two on the day.
Senior Rich Mychack led Gwynedd Mercy (5-11-1, 2-3-1 CSAC) with four shots, while senior goaltender Matt Chilcote notched four saves.
The Cavaliers will hit the road on Saturday, as they travel to Langhorne, Pa. to face Cairn University (7-6-1, 3-2 CSAC). Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
