GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Cabrini volleyball season came to an end tonight, as the Cavaliers suffered a 3-0 loss to Eagle Road rival No. 16 Eastern University in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament at Stockton University.
The 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 loss closes the Blue and White's 2015 campaign with a 25-10 record, marking the third consecutive 25 win season for the Cavaliers.
Tonight's loss also marks the final match for Cabrini's three seniors,
Jen Grenauer,
Cassidy Koenig and
Harlee Scanlan. The class led the Cavaliers to 100 career victories, including an incredible 43-1 mark in Colonial States Athletic Conference play and three consecutive CSAC titles.
As a group, the ladies collected 1,370 kills, 4,301 assists, 1,416 digs and 199 total blocks in their careers.
The Cavaliers never found their offensive rhythm tonight, scoring just 24 digs and a .049 hitting percentage, both season lows.
Grenauer accounted for six of those kills, one more than sophomore
Anne-Marie Jones. Junior
Christine Ingargiola and sophomores
Nicole Sokolovich and
Chelsea Jones tallied four kills each.
Koenig posted 21 assists on the night, while freshman
Ashley Shannon recorded a team high 10 digs, three more than Koenig.
Cabrini jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the opening set, but the Eagles responded with seven of the next nine points, building a 9-8 lead, one they would not relinquish. An Eastern service error evened the score at 9-9 before the Eagles closed the set, winning 16 of the last 19 points of the frame.
The Blue and White built an early 4-0 lead in the second set before Eastern used a 10-2 run to take a 10-6 lead. Cabrini pulled to within one point twice over the next few minutes, but again Eastern had an answer, pushing its cushion back to 16-10. The Cavaliers came no closer than two points in the frame before falling behind two sets to none.
Cabrini established another early advantage in the third set, pulling ahead 4-1. Eastern fought back, building a 12-7 lead. The Cavaliers scored the next two points, pulling within 12-9 but they would get no closer.
Erin Hillman led Eastern (29-7) with nine kills, while Rikki Schlager added 27 assists and Rylie Haas 16 digs.
In the Stockton Regional's first two matches, No. 5 Christopher Newport defeated Hunter 3-0, while Randolph-Macon scored a 3-1 win over Stevenson. Stockton and Galluadet are slated the meet in the night's final match.
Christopher Newport and Randolph-Macon will meet in Saturday's first regional semifinal, with Eastern to meet the winner of Friday night's finale. Saturday's winners will meet in Sunday's regional final, with the victor headed to next weekend's national quarterfinals in Grand Rapids, Mich.
