GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Cabrini men's basketball team saw another game come down to the final minutes tonight, as the Cavaliers suffered an 85-82 loss at Guilford College in the final game of this weekend's Guilford College Invitational.
The loss dropped the Blue and White to 2-2 on the season.
Sophomore
Jair Green led four Cavaliers in double figure scoring with 23 points to go with a career best four blocked shots. Classmate
Tyheim Monroe posted his fourth consecutive double-double, pairing 15 points and 15 rebounds. Both were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances over the weekend.
Senior
Ace Henry connected on 6-10 from three point range, scoring 18 points, while sophomore
Deryl Bagwell chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Despite owning a lead for most of the opening 20 minutes, the Cavaliers could not pull away. Cabrini's cushion grew to 10 points on a Henry triple midway through the first half and again with just under five minutes left in the half as junior
Ryan Charity hit a pair of free throws.
After shooting just shy of 40% from the field in the first half, the Blue and White took a 45-39 lead into the halftime break.
Green scored the first five points of the second half, extending the lead to 11 points. Another Henry three pointer pushed the lead to a game-high 58-46 with just under 15 minutes to play when the Pride began their comeback.
Guilford slowly chipped away at its deficit, eventually taking the lead 66-64 on a Justen Best three pointer. A Green fast break dunk briefly returned the lead to Cabrini but another Guilford triple on the ensuing possession gave the Pride the lead for good.
Minutes later, a 7-0 spurt for Guilford pushed its lead to 80-72 with 95 seconds on the clock, but Cabrini wasn't done. The Cavaliers kept the game within one possession but the Pride connected on 5-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute.
The Blue and White had one final three point attempt that missed the mark with just seconds to play.
Trevor Mayo led Guilford (3-0) with 15 points, while Best finished with 14 points off the bench.
The Cavaliers will make their home debut on Tuesday, as they welcome No. 20 College of Wooster (1-1) to Nerney Field House. Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
