RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team opened its home slate today, but the Cavaliers never found their shooting touch in the comfy confines of the Nerney Field House, falling to the No. 20 College of Wooster Fighting Scots 79-59.
The Blue and White (2-3) shot a season low .300 from the field, including 6-21 from the three point line, and connected on just 17 of its 30 free throw attempts. Its 15 turnovers also marked a season high.
Sophomore
Deryl Bagwell led the Cavaliers with 22 points on 8-14 from the field, including 4-9 from deep. Classmate
Tyheim Monroe recorded his fifth double-double in as many games, pairing 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Sophomore
Jair Green added eight points, 10 rebounds, a career high five steals, four assists and a pair of blocked shots.
The opening 13 minutes of action went back and forth, with both clubs building small leads, but with the score tied at 18, the Scots began to pull away. Wooster used a 9-2 spurt to build a 27-20 lead with 5:40 left in the first half, before scoring the final six points of the stanza to carry a 35-26 lead into the halftime break.
Cabrini's deficit grew to 14 points in the first three minutes of the second half. The Wooster cushion hovered between 10-14 points for most of the second half. Each time it looked as though the Cavaliers would make a run, the Scots would hit a big shot to regain the momentum.
The Blue and White whittled the lead back to seven with just over six minutes to play, but Wooster responded with four quick points. A pair of Bagwell free throws cut the deficit to 65-56 but the Cavalier went cold from the field, scoring just three points over the game's final four minutes.
Sophomore Spencer Williams led Wooster (2-1) with 18 points, while freshman Mitch Balser and junior Dan Fanelly combined for 27 points off the bench on 10-12 shooting, including 4-4 from three point range.
The Cavaliers will return to the hardwood on Saturday, as they host the 2015 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, an all-day event, featuring four games. The Blue and White will close the action at 6 p.m., as it hosts Stevenson University (0-4).
