Men's Basketball Falls in Final Seconds of Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

RADNOR, Pa. – For the second time this season, the Cabrini men's basketball team found itself on the losing side of game-winning shot in the game's final seconds.

Stevenson University senior Christian Roberts scored the final two of his 23 points with 3.7 seconds to play, downing the Cavaliers 71-69 in the final game of the 2015 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Nerney Field House.

With the loss, the Blue and White falls to 2-4 on the season.

Sophomore Jair Green led Cabrini with 16 points and three blocked shots, while classmate Deryl Bagwell added 11 points and seven boards.  Junior Sean Mayo added season highs of 10 points and six rebounds, while blocking a career best three shots.

Sophomore Tyheim Monroe extended his double-double streak, pairing 15 points and 15 boards for his sixth double-double of the season.

For the second consecutive home game, Cabrini struggled with its shooting touch, connecting on just 37.1% of its field goal attempts, including 3-14 from the three point line.

Defensively, the Blue and White held Stevenson to just 41.5% shooting and blocked a season high nine shots.

Stevenson controlled the scoreboard throughout the first half.  The Cavaliers trailed by as many as eight points with 7:42 left in the stanza, before slicing its deficit to just 30-26 at the halftime break.

The Cavaliers saw their deficit grow to 44-35 at the 12:15 mark, but the Blue and White responded with eight consecutive points to pull back to within one.

The Mustangs returned the favor minutes later, using an 8-0 run of their own to extend the cushion to a game high 11 points at  59-48 with 8:19 on the clock.  Cabrini again had an answer, scoring the next nine points, as freshman Ivan Robinson's free throws cut the deficit to 59-57 with 6:45 to play.

Despite not being able to grab the lead, the Cavaliers kept the Mustangs within reach, as the lead bounced between 1-3 points for much of the final seven minutes.

Stevenson connected on 9-11 from the free throw line in the second half, but its final miss gave Cabrini the opening it needed. A Green tip-in with 40 seconds to play pulled the Cavaliers within 68-67.

On the Mustangs' next possession, Roberts split a pair from the charity stripe, missing the second.  Bagwell was fouled on the rebound and calmly knocked down two free throws to even the score at 69 with 30 seconds on the clock.

With the time dwindling, Robertson did what he had done throughout the second half, hit a bucket when the momentum seemed to be swinging to the Blue and White.

Cabrini created one final attempt in the game's final seconds but Bagwell's half-court shot fell just short.

Robinson finished the night with eight points, one fewer than senior Ace Henry.

Roberts led all scorers with 23 points, including 16 points on 7-11 shooting in the second half.  Fellow senior Joe Kiely narrowly missed a double-double, pairing 10 points and nine rebounds for the Mustangs (1-4).

In the day's opening game, junior DeShawn Lowman paired 23 points and 10 boards to lead Neumann (3-3) to an 85-68 win over the University of Valley Forge.  Classmate James Butler added 21 points, seven rebounds and seven steals in the win.

Junior Devin Williams led Valley Forge (2-5) with 20 points and eight boards, while sophomore Thorne McIntosh chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds.

William Paterson University (4-2) trailed for much of the day before using a late 10-0 run to earn a 72-68 victory over Rosemont College (3-2).  Senior Bright Mensah earned game-high honors with 29 points on 12-17 from the floor.

Senior Marcus Thomas led Rosemont with 21 points, while sophomores Clayton Wolfe and Mekhi Clemons added eight points each.

Former Cabrini head coach Marcus Kahn returned to Nerney Field House to lead his University of Mary Washington (3-2) club a convincing 95-64 win over Bryn Athyn College (0-3). Junior TJ Jones scored 23 points, including 5-8 from three point range, to lead four Eagles in double figure scoring.  Freshman Mark Madison added 15 points and five assists.

Junior Stephan Tucker and sophomore Adonis Rosario led the Lions with 10 points each off the bench.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, as they open Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a trip to Immaculata University (0-3, 0-1 CSAC).  Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
