COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team extended its current win streak to four games with tonight's 62-54 victory at Ursinus College. With the nonconference victory, the Cavaliers evened their overall record at 4-4.
Senior
Meghan Martin led the Blue and White with 17 points in 24 minutes, including a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Junior
Renee Oliver narrowly missed a double-double, pairing nine points and nine rebounds. Senior
Dana Peterson added nine points in the win.
Sophomore
Sabrina Hackendorn grabbed a team high 10 rebounds, with seven coming on the offensive glass, while senior
Kristina Startare tallied six points and six boards.
The Bears led for the majority of the opening quarter, expanding its lead to 14-9 with just under three minutes left in the period. Back to back layups by Martin and Startare cut the deficit back to one points, but an Ursinus jumper at the buzzer gave the Bears a 16-13 lead.
The Blue and White turned up the defense in the second quarter, holding Ursinus to just six points in the 10 minute period. The Bears remained scoreless for the first 6:11 of the quarter, as Cabrini took control of the game. Two Startare free throws sent Cabrini into the halftime break with a 29-22 lead.
Junior
Tayler Holmes scored five of her seven points in the first minute of the third quarter, extending Cabrini's lead to a game high 12 points at 34-22. The cushion remained double figures through much of the quarter, but the Bears scored the final eight points of the frame. A jumper in the final seconds of the quarter sent the game to the fourth quarter with Cabrini's lead down to 44-40.
Peterson's lay-up snapped a nearly three minute scoreless stretch for the Cavaliers and pushed the lead back to six points. With Cabrini leading 48-44, both teams went scoreless for four minutes before Peterson and Martin hit three pointers on consecutive possessions, pushing the lead back to 54-44 with 3:19 to play.
Ursinus cut the lead back to four points with 43 seconds on the clock, but Martin and Holmes converted 8-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
The Blue and White connected on a season high .455 from three point range and knocked down 13 of its 15 trips to the charity stripe.
Defensively, Cabrini held Ursinus to under 35% shooting from the field, including 1-7 from beyond the three point arc.
Alyssa Polemi led Ursinus (4-4) with 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Rachel Guy added 12 points, while Elana Roadcloud grabbed a game high 13 rebounds.
The Cavaliers will turn their attention to next week's final exams, as the club won't return to action until Sunday, Dec. 20, when it faces Albright College (8-0, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth). Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Nerney Field House.
