Women's Basketball Scores 65-57 Win in CSAC Opener

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – After four consecutive losses to open the campaign, the Cabrini women's basketball team rallied from a 10 point deficit to earn a 65-57 victory at Centenary College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The win improved the Cavaliers to 1-4 overall and extended their CSAC win streak to 26 games.

One game after scoring a career best 16 points, senior Dana Peterson set a new high with 20 points tonight, hitting 7-11 from the field, including a career high four made three pointers.

Senior Meghan Martin and junior Tayler Holmes added 11 points each, with all of Martin's scoring coming in the second half.  The senior also added six rebounds and four steals.

The Cavaliers built an early 12-5 lead before going cold from the field.  The Blue and White remained scoreless for the final 4:54 of the quarter, allowing the Cyclones to take a 15-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Cabrini saw its deficit grow to 29-19 midway through the second quarter.  The Blue and White turned up the defense and outscored Centenary 10-2 to end the half, as sophomore Sabrina Hackendorn's jumper cut the Cyclones lead to 31-29 at the half.

The Blue and White's hot play continued into the third quarter, as it scored the opening eight points of the frame.  Martin found junior Renee Oliver for a lay-up that expanded the Cavaliers' cushion to 43-33 midway through the period.

Cabrini outscored Centenary 21-13 in the third quarter to carry a 50-44 lead into the final 10 minute period.

Centenary wasted little time cutting into Cabrini's lead, pulling within 52-50 with 7:26 to play.  On the Cavaliers' ensuing possession, Peterson knocked down a three pointer to return the lead to five points.

Peterson's triple sparked an 11-3 Blue and White spurt that expanded the lead to 63-53 with just 2:33 on the clock.

Hackendorn finished the night with seven points and six rebounds, while Oliver paired six points and a team high seven boards.

Mallory George led Centenary (3-3, 0-1 CSAC) with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Ally Fugnitti and Nicole Cartaino combined for 25 points.

The Cavaliers will look to build a win streak on Saturday, as they travel to Rosemont College (2-3, 1-0 CSAC) to face the Ravens in CSAC play.  Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
