ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team took advantage of a dominant second quarter, outscoring Rosemont 16-7, and a hot-handed
Meghan Martin to claim its second consecutive victory.
Today's nearly wire to wire 67-49 win at Rosemont College extended the team's Colonial States Athletic Conference win streak to 27 games and improved the Blue and White to 2-0 in the CSAC and 2-4 overall.
Martin had a career day, posting a career best 26 points in just 28 minutes off the bench. The senior connected on 11-17 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds in the win.
Junior
Tayler Holmes added nine points, while seniors
Dana Peterson and
Kristina Startare and sophomore
Kate Skalski added six points each.
The Cavaliers controlled the glass to the tune of a 43-23 rebounding advantage. Sophomore
Sabrina Hackendorn corralled eight boards, while Startare added six, one more than junior
Renee Oliver.
While Rosemont scored the game's first bucket, the Cavaliers took the lead for good less than two minutes later, as Peterson hit the first of the Blue and White's seven three pointers on the day.
A Holmes triple broke an early tie, as Cabrini outscored Rosemont 13-6 over the final six minutes of the first quarter, building an 18-11 cushion.
Cabrini extended its lead early in the second stanza as it opened the frame on a 9-0 run. The Blue and White also used its defense to pull away from the Ravens. The Cavaliers held Rosemont scoreless for a period of nearly five minutes in the quarter, holding the Raves to 0-5 from the floor and forcing three turnovers during the run.
The Cavaliers carried their comfortable 34-18 lead into the third quarter, where Rosemont would not allow the Blue and White to pull away. The lead grew as high as 47-28 on Martin's three pointer with just south of three minutes left in the frame, but the Ravens scored the final seven points of the quarter and trailed just 47-35 after three quarters.
A three point play and a tip-in by Martin expanded the lead back to 18 points just over 2:30 into the final quarter. Rosemont did not get within 14 points the rest of the game, as Cabrini outscored the Ravens 20-14 in the final 10 minutes.
The Cavaliers shot a season high 41.5% from the field in today's victory and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Defensively, the Blue and White held Rosemont to just 7-29 in the opening 20 minutes, as Cabrini built its lead.
Ayanna Thompson led the Ravens (2-4, 0-2 CSAC) with 12 points, while Leilani Naone-Carter paired eight points and a game high 10 rebounds.
The Blue and White has a short turnaround, as it will host Delaware Valley University (1-6, 0-2 MAC Freedom) on Monday. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Nerney Field House.
