SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-15 loss to Colorado College in today's season opener, played at the University of California-Santa Barbara.
Senior
Lacie Doubet led the Cavaliers with six goals on the day, while junior
Sarah Carzo matched a career high with four goals. Senior
Melissa Scanzano added three goals
and sophomore
Jess Breuning two. Senior
Sarah Means recorded a pair of assists.
The Tigers opened the scoring at the 23:45 mark, before Scanzano tallied the Blue and White's first goal of 2015. Just 23 seconds later, Means found Carzo to give Cabrini its only lead of the day. Colorado regained its advantage with a pair of goals before Doubet's first of the day evened the score at 3-3 midway through the opening half.
Colorado scored four of the final five goals of the first half, interrupted by Doubet's second tally of the day with just shy of five minutes left in the first half. After 30 minutes of action, Cabrini trailed Colorado 7-4.
The Blue and White's deficit grew to 8-4 in the opening 30 seconds of the second half before Carzo's unassisted tally stopped a Tigers' 3-0 run. Trailing 10-5, Doubet completed her hat trick with 24:42 to play.
Despite goals by Carzo and Scanzano, the Cavaliers fell behind 14-8 with just under 15 minutes left in the game. Breuning, Carzo and Scanzano found the back of the net to cut the deficit in half with 10:29 on the clock.
A nine second span saw the Tigers extend their cushion back to five goals at 16-11. Doubet and Breuning again sliced Cabriini's deficit to three goals with just under five minutes to play.
Consecutive Colorado goals pushed the lead back to five goals before Doubet tallied two goals in the final minute of play.
The Cavaliers struggled to find its rhythm in the opening half, as they recorded just seven shots, scooped seven ground balls and forced one free position shot in the opening 30 minutes. The second 30 minute period found the Blue and White forcing the action.
In the second half, Cabrini outshot Colorado 22-16, including 21 shots on goal, and forced 12 free position shots.
Doubet and Scanzano led the Cavaliers with eight shots each, while Scanzano and fellow senior
Bree Thompson scooped four ground balls and forced two turnovers each. Breuning accounted for six of the club's 14 draw controls.
Sophomore
Megan Barlow recorded five saves in her first career start between the Cabrini pipes.
Sadie Cole led Colorado (1-0) with four goals and an assists, while goaltender Martha Smith recorded 12 saves.
The Cavaliers will return east before visiting Haverford College (1-0) on Wednesday. The opening draw is slated for 4 p.m.
