SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team suffered its third setback in as many games today, as the Cavaliers lost at Swarthmore 19-12.
Sophomore
Jess Breuning led the Blue and White with a career high five goals, while senior
Melissa Scanzano recorded a hat trick. Freshman
Jackie Neary scooped a game high four ground balls and senior
Tori Canelli caused three turnovers.
Senior
Lacie Doubet led the Cavaliers with six draw controls, one more than classmate
Bree Thompson.
Sophomore netminder
Megan Barlow recorded 10 saves in the loss.
The Blue and White fell behind early, as Swarthmore scored two goals in the game's opening minute. Thompson's unassisted tally put the Cavaliers on the board just south of five minutes into the game.
The clubs exchanged goals over the next several minutes, with Scanzano netting two Cabrini goals.
The Garnet created some distance with three unanswered goals midway through the period, but senior
Kristina Quintiliani and Breuning combined for three goals to bring Cabrini to within 8-7. Swarthmore extended its lead to 9-7 at the half with a goal just before the buzzer.
Cabrini took the field for the second half with a renewed sense of vigor, as Scanzano, Breuning and junior
Sarah Carzo found the back of the net to give the Blue and White a 10-9 lead at the 26:48 mark.
The lead was short lived, as Swarthmore outscored Cabrini 10-2 over the final 25 minutes of action.
The Cavaliers outshot the Garnet 34-33, including nine shots from Doubet and seven each from Breuning and Scanzano.
Elyse Tierney led Swarthmore (1-0) with seven goals and an assist, while Lizzie Kolln paired four goals and three helpers.
The Cavaliers will head to Florida for its annual Spring Break training trip before returning to action on March 10 when it visits No. 7 The College of New Jersey.
