CHESTER, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team found its offensive rhythm tonight, as the Cavaliers topped Widener University 20-13 for their first win of the season.
Seven Cavaliers found the back of the net tonight, led by senior
Lacie Doubet and sophomore
Jess Breuning, who netted six goals each, a career high for Breuning. Fellow seniors
Melissa Scanzano and
Bree Thompson added four points each, combining for three goals and five assists, while classmate
Sarah Means tallied a hat trick.
The Blue and White recorded 45 shots on the day, while holding the Pride to 25, including just eight second half shots. Doubet led Cabrini with 13 shots, while Breuning added nine.
Cabrini's 45 shots are the most the club has attempted since recording 48 shots in the 2013 CSAC Championship game against Neumann.
Senior
Tori Canelli scooped a game high six ground balls, while Scanzano and fellow senior
Taylor Carroll caused two turnovers each. Breuning also controlled six draws, one more than Doubet and three more than Scanzano.
Sophomore goaltender
Megan Barlow tallied five saves to earn her first career victory.
The Pride jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Cavaliers responded in a big way. Scanzano, Doubet and Means combined for four unanswered goals, giving the Blue and White a 4-2 lead just over 10 minutes into the game.
Despite goals by junior
Sarah Carzo and Means, Widener battled back to even the score at 6-6 with 8:45 left in the opening half. The Cavaliers, again, had an answer, posting another 4-0 spurt. Goals by Breuning, Doubet, Means and freshman
Jackie Neary gave the Blue and White a 10-6 cushion with 3:14 left in the half.
Widener scored three late goals to cut its deficit to 10-9 at the halftime break.
Cabrini took control of the second half, outscoring the Pride 10-4. Breuning extended the lead to 12-9 with two goals in the first four minutes of the period. Following a Widener goal, Doubet and Thompson recorded unassisted goals to give the Cavaliers another four goal lead.
Another Pride tally interrupted Cabrini's scoring run but the Blue and White put the game away over the next 10 minutes with five unanswered goals. Doubet and Breuning scored two goals each during the spurt, while Scanzano paired a goal and an assist to push the lead to 19-11 with 1:47 on the clock.
Breuning closed the club's scoring in the final minute for her career high sixth tally of the night.
Brooke Clasing led Widener (1-1) with six goals and two assists, while goaltender Megan Dunn posted 20 saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will look to build a win streak on Saturday, as the club visits Ursinus College (0-4). Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
