HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team rebounded from Saturday's disappointment to score a 13-10 victory at Hampden-Sydney College. The victory improved the No. 7 Cavaliers to 2-1 on the season.
Six Cavaliers found the back of the net in the win, including three players with hat tricks. Sophomore
Evan Downey led the way with four points on three goals and an assists, while senior
Damian Sobieski and junior
Sebastian Kerslake matched the sophomore with three goals.
Junior
Ethan Heisman netted a pair of goals, while seniors
Mike Leyden and
Patrick Nolan each scored once. Leyden and classmate
Enrique Montoya added two assists each.
The Blue and White fell behind early, as it surrendered the game's first two goals. Downey put Cabrini on the board with a pair of unassisted goals in the final 4:01 of the opening quarter.
Leyden found Kerslake at the 11 minute mark of the second quarter to give the Cavaliers their first lead of the game. Seventeen seconds later, Leyden doubled the lead with his sixth goal of the season.
The Tigers cut their deficit in half but it took Cabrini just 22 seconds to regain its two goal cushion, as Sobieski notched his fifth goal of 2015. HSC scored the final two goals of the quarter, sending the teams into the halftime break tied at 5-5.
The team exchanged goals in the first four minutes of the third quarter, including goals by Downey and Sobieski, but a four minute stretch midway through the period gave the Blue and White the cushion it needed.
During that span, four Cavaliers scored as Cabrini netted four unanswered goals. Montoya connected with Kerslake at the 10:33 mark for the junior's first goal of the season, while Downey found Sobieski 1:17 later.
Heisman scored his first goal of the season with 8:23 left in the quarter, while Nolan notched his first goal since the 2011 season and the second of his career at the 7:50 mark.
HSC closed the third and opened the fourth quarters with goals, cutting Cabrini's lead to 11-9 before goals by Heisman and Kerslake extended the lead back to four goals with 8:03 to play.
Leyden led the Blue and White with nine shots in the win, one more than Downey and three more than Sobieski. Sobieski scooped a game-high six ground balls, while senior
Anthony DiNenno and junior
Dan Hopson secured five each.
DiNenno also went 14-23 from the faceoff spot, while Hopson forced a pair of turnovers. Freshman goaltender
Tyler Morrell recorded 10 saves to earn the win for the Cavaliers.
Thomas Armstrong led the Tigers (2-2) with three goals and five ground balls, while Mike Funk paired two goals and two assists.
The Blue and White will play its third consecutive road game on Saturday, as it travels to Dickinson College (1-2) to face the Red Devils. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.in Carlisle, Pa.
