Seniors Lead Women's Lacrosse to Win in Regular Season Finale

Story Links

RADNOR, Pa. – For the first time since 2012, the Cabrini women's lacrosse team will enter the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament on a winning streak, as the Cavaliers closed their regular season with tonight's 13-7 win over the University of Scranton.

The Blue and White's first win over the Lady Royals since 2010 extended the club's win streak to seven games and closes the regular season with a 12-5 record overall.

Tonight's game also marked the final regular season home appearance for Cabrini's 10 seniors.  Among the most successful groups in program history, the class has scored 866 points on 639 goals, scooped 853 ground balls and controlled 529 controls.

The seniors led the Blue and White to their 47th career victory, as the class accounted for 13 points on nine goals and four assists, secured 24 ground balls and caused 10 turnovers tonight.

Senior Lacie Doubet led the way with five goals, giving her 218 career goals, just three shy of Erin Nollen's program record.  The five points also moved her ahead of Nollen for second on the program's all-time points list with 288.

Fellow senior Melissa Scanzano added two goals and an assist to go with a team high three draw controls.  Sophomore Jess Breuning recorded two goals and a season high seven ground balls.

Senior Bree Thompson paired season highs of eight ground balls and four caused turnovers to go with a goal, while junior Sarah Carzo tallied a goal, an assist and six ground balls.

Senior Megan Decker controlled the Blue and white defensive effort with five ground balls and five caused turnovers.  Sophomore Megan Barlow earned the victory after recording six saves.

Scranton opened the scoring less than 90 seconds into the action, but the Blue and White responded with three unanswered goals by Doubet and Scanzano. Another Royals' goal cut the lead back to one before freshman Jackie Neary scored her seventh goal of the year.

A pair of Scranton goals evened the score at 4-4 with 18:25 left in the half.  A Cabrini timeout helped refocus the club, as it responded with six unanswered goals.  Thompson, Carzo and Breuning scored late in the first half to extend the lead to 7-4 at the break.

Breuning and Doubet combined for three unassisted tallies in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, pushing the cushion to 10-4.

Scranton grabbed some momentum with a trio of unassisted goals to cut its deficit in half with 14:29 to play.  Another timeout slowed the Royals' momentum, as Doubet, sophomore Allie Vallen and Scanzano scored three consecutive goals to seal the win.

Megan Kerr led Scranton (6-8) with two goals, while Marne Rossetti recorded six saves.

The Cavaliers have a few days to relax, as the club will not return to action until Wednesday's CSAC Tournament semifinal round.  Cabrini will face the lowest remaining seed after Saturday's opening round games.

Third seeded Immaculata will host six seed Notre Dame (Md.), while number four seed Marywood will host fifth seeded Gwynedd Mercy.
