RADNOR, Pa. – Senior
Damian Sobieski scored both of his goals in the final four minutes to help the Cavaliers secure a 9-5 victory over Gwynedd Mercy at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
With the win, the No. 16 Blue and White improve to 3-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference and 7-5 overall. The victory also extends the club's conference win streak to 90 games.
Senior
Tyler Johnston led Cabrini with four points, matching Sobieski's two goals and adding a pair of assists. Fellow senior
Mike Leyden added a goal and a helper, while juniors
Kyle Bush,
Sebastian Kerslake and
Ethan Heisman and sophomore
Evan Downey also marked the score book.
Johnston accounted for 11 of the Cavaliers' 38 shots on the night, while Downey, Leyden and Sobieski fired five each.
Seven Cavaliers also recorded at least three ground balls, as the Blue and White secured 38 ground balls to Gwynedd Mercy's 23.
Senior
Patrick Nolan matched a career high with five caused turnovers and joined Leyden with five ground balls each.
Freshman goaltender
Tyler Morrell notched 11 saves to earn the victory.
Leyden scored the game's first goal, just 48 seconds into the game, but it proved to be the only goal in the first quarter. The Griffins responded with a goal less than 90 seconds into the second quarter before the Cavaliers rallied to score four unanswered goals.
Cabrini took control of the second quarter, as it outshot the Griffins 17-4. Kerslake broke the 1-1 tie at the 12:56 mark with his seventh tally of the year. Just one minute later, Downey extended the cushion with his 10th tally of 2015.
Johnston added his second assist of the period when he connected with Bush for the junior's first goal of the season. With time running down in the period, junior
Carter Treuchet found Heisman on a fast break to send Cabrini into the halftime break with a 5-1 lead.
Following a Gwynedd Mercy goal, freshman
Ethan Trusty notched his first career assist when he found Johnston to maintain the four goal cushion.
The Griffins cut Cabrini's lead in half with a man-up goal early in the fourth quarter, but Johnston's 14th goal of the season gave the Blue and White a bunch of breathing room. With just over four minutes to play, Leyden's long pass found Sobieski to push the lead back to four goals at 8-4.
Gwynedd Mercy's second man-up goal of the period pulled the Griffins to within 8-5 with 2:24 to play, but Sobieski's 23rd goal of the year iced the win with 69 seconds left.
Junior Nick Guglielmi led the Griffins (8-3, 2-1 CSAC) with two goals , while senior Nico Belardo added a goal and two assists. Senior goaltender John Black matched Morrell with 11 saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, when they face Keystone College (2-5, 1-2 CSAC) at Ridley high School. The 4:30 CSAC tilt will be played as part of the
HEADStrong Relentless Cup, a day-long lacrosse fundraising event to support the HEADstrong Foundation's fight against cancer.
