SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team saw its 20 point second half lead whittled to four points in the final minute, but the club withstood a furious rally from the Marywood University Pacers to score an 80-73 victory this afternoon.
With the win, the Blue and White improved to 8-6 overall and 6-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Four Cavaliers scored in double figures today, led by sophomore
Jair Green, who shot 9-11 from the field en route to 20 points. Classmate
Tyheim Monroe recorded his 14th double-double in as many games, pairing 17 points on 6-8 shooting and 17 rebounds.
Fellow sophomore
Deryl Bagwell knocked down a trio of three pointers, tallying 15 points, six rebounds and five assists. Senior
Ace Henry knocked down four three pointers, scoring 12 points on the day.
Green got the Cavaliers off to a good start, as the sophomore scored six points in the opening thee minutes of the game to send Cabrini to an early 8-0 lead. While the Pacers crept back, the Cavaliers used a 9-0 spurt midway through the opening half to build a 23-12 lead.
Cabrini's lead grew as big as 14 points on Henry's three pointer with 5:12 left in the stanza. Marywood responded with an 18-3 run of its own to take a 32-31 lead on Conner Callejas' fast break lay-up with 31 seconds to play. The lead was short-lived, as junior
Ryan Charity tipped in a Bagwell miss to give the Blue and White a slim 33-32 halftime lead.
The game remained tight in the opening minutes of the second half, but with 13:52 to play, the Cavaliers began to pull away. Over the next 6:26, Cabrini seemingly put the game out of reach with a 21-3 run. Bagwell's three pointer gave Cabrini a game high 63-43 lead with 7:26 left in the game.
The Pacers scored the game's next nine points and extended their run to 25-9, pulling within 72-68 on James Curley's three pointer with just under a minute to play. The Blue and White sealed the victory at the free throw line, as Green, Bagwell freshman
Robbie Brosh IV and Monroe combined to go 8-8 from the stripe in the final 35 seconds.
Callejas finished the day with 30 points for Marywood (4-11, 0-8 CSAC), while Shane Letthand recorded seven points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, when they welcome the Neumann University Knights (9-6, 5-3 CSAC) to Nerney Field House in a rematch of the 2015 CSAC championship game. Tip is slated for 6:30 p.m.
