Men's Basketball Rally Falls Short in Neumann Loss

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cavaliers trailed by as many as 22 points midway through the second half and pulled within five points in the final minutes, but the Cabrini men's basketball team would get no closer, as it fell to Neumann University 92-80 tonight at Nerney Field House.

The loss drops the Cavaliers to 8-7 overall and 6-3 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, good for a second place tie with the Knights.

Sophomore Jair Green led the Cavaliers with a career high 28 points, to go with six rebounds, two blocked shots and three steals.  Classmate Tyheim Monroe added his 15th double-double of the season, pairing 18 points and 19 rebounds with five assists.

Freshman Ivan Robinson posted 16 points, six boards and three steals, while senior Ace Henry added 10 points.  Sophomore Deryl Bagwell stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, four rebounds, a career high six assists and two blocked shots in 35 minutes off the bench.

After watching the Knights score the first eight points of the night, the Cavaliers responded with a 13-2 run, as Henry's triple gave Cabrini a 13-10 lead.  While the game remained close over the next few minutes, Neumann used an 18-6 run over the final 6:45 of the half.

Neumann's DeShawn Lowman took advantage of a late Cabrini turnover and hit a three pointer at the buzz, giving the Knights a 47-29 lead at the break.

The Cavaliers struggled with their shooting touch in the first half, as the club connected on just 10-34 in the first half, including 1-10 from three point range.  Neumann took advantage, shooting 53% from the field with six field goals coming from beyond the three point line.

Cabrini's deficit grew to 22 points several times early in the second half, but trailing 67-45 with 11:32 to play, the Cavaliers began their comeback.

Over the next nine minutes, the Blue and White chipped away at the Neumann lead, attacking the basket and knocking down its free throws.  Bagwell sliced through the lane for a lay-up with 2:25 to play, cutting Neumann's lead to just five points at 80-75.

Neumann recorded the next four points to regain the game's momentum before connecting on 6-6 from the charity stripe to seal the victory.

Five Knights (10-6, 6-3 CSAC) scored in double figures, led by junior James Butler's 21 points and eight rebounds.  Lowman finished the night with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Darian Barnes recorded 17 points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, as they are scheduled to visit Summit University in La Plume, Pa. at 3 p.m.
