SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team took Marywood to the final minute before the Pacers pulled out a 70-65 victory, sending the Cavaliers to 8-8 on the season, including 5-2 in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.
Senior
Meghan Martin notched her fourth 20 point performance of the campaign, leading the Blue and White with 23 points, including 19 second half points. Classmate
Dana Peterson added 12 points, while junior
Renee Oliver paired nine points and eight rebounds.
Both clubs used the opening 10 minute quarter to feel each other out, as the first quarter saw three ties and three lead changes. The Cavaliers used a late 7-0 spurt to carry a 12-11 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter played out like the first, with five lead changes and three ties. Peterson's jumper tied the score at 26 with 14 seconds to play before Marywood's Alyssa Olson gave the Pacers a 28-26 lead on the final possession of the second quarter.
The Blue and White took control of the scoreboard early in the second half, as Oliver's jumper capped an 11-2 run, giving the Cavaliers a 42-36 lead with 5:15 left in the third quarter. The Pacers responded with a 9-0 spurt of their own, as Tara Steakin's three point play put Marywood ahead 49-46, a three point cushion they would carry into the final period.
After scoring the first four points of the final stanza, Cabrini fell behind a game high seven points midway through the period. The Blue and White had an answer, as Peterson's three pointer pulled the Cavaliers back to 60-58 at the 3:09 mark.
Marywood used a 6-1 spurt to build a 66-59 cushion with 64 seconds on the clock. Martin completed a traditional three point play and knocked down her second three pointer of the night, pulling the Cavaliers back to 68-65 with 26 seconds to play.
Cabrini missed a pair of three point attempts in the final 12 seconds, while Marywood hit 2-4 from the free throw line to seal the win.

Kristina Startare posted six points, six rebound and four assists, while senior
Mo O'Connell and freshman
Nomi Washington combined for nine points and nine rebounds.
Gabrielle Giordano led Marywood (10-6, 7-0 CSAC) with a game high 24 points. Steakin and Natasha Hessling added 11 points each, while Alexa Gerchman tallied nine points, nine rebounds and three steals.
The Cavaliers will return to the hardwood on Saturday, as the club will travel to Allentown, Pa. to face Cedar Crest College (0-16, 0-8 CSAC). Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
