Men's Basketball Completes Comeback to Top Staten Island 85-80

SALISBURY. MD – One day after seeing its comeback attempt fall short, the Cabrini men's basketball team completed a second half comeback today, scoring an 85-80 win over the College of Staten Island (CIS) in the consolation game of the Salisbury University Optimist Tournament.

Senior Ryan Charity led the Cavaliers with a career high 26 points, including 19 second half points, as the Blue and White improved to 2-1 on the season.

Junior Tyheim Monroe extended his double-double streak to 30 games, pairing 17 points and 19 boards, while classmate Deryl Bagwell added 17 points.

Junior Joe Mostardi notched nine points, one than sophomore Ivan Robinson.

After both teams exchanged the lead in the early going, the Cavaliers took control of the action.  Monroe's offensive rebound and putback gave the Cavaliers a 23-12 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half.

The Dolphins slowly whittled away at Cabrini's lead, closing the first half on an 11-3 spurt.  Frank Schettino's three pointer with two seconds left in the stanza gave CIS a 40-38 lead at the half.

The Blue and White deficit grew to a game high nine points with 14:04 to play on Edin Bracic's three pointer.

The Cabrini deficit remained at nine points until it began its comeback with a Charity triple with 9:17 to play.  The senior's long jumper sparked a 9-2 run, as junior Chris Lawhorn's lay-up gave the Cavaliers a 66-65 lead with just north of six minutes to play.

Both clubs exchanged the lead over the next several minutes, until Robinson's three point play gave the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish.  The sophomore's hoop and harm gave Cabrini a 74-72 lead with 2:25 to play.

The Blue and White sealed the win at the free throw line, connecting on 9-11 from the stripe in the game's waning moments.

The Cavaliers used their aggressiveness in the second half to make 17 trips to the free throw line, connecting on 13 attempts, while the Dolphins attempted just five free throws.  Charity hit all seven of his attempts and joined Monroe and Bagwell to go 11-11 in the second half.

Schettino led all scorers with 28 points, while Blacic and Khaleeq Baum added 13 points each for the Dolphins (0-2).

The Cavaliers will head north on Tuesday, as they travel to the University of Scranton (1-0) for the team's annual meeting.  Tip is slated for 8pm, following the women's game.
