Volleyball Claims 4th Straight CSAC Title in 5 Set Thriller

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini volleyball team claimed its fourth consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference championship and seventh title in the last eight years, with tonight's hard fought 3-2 win over Keystone College.

The top seeded Cavaliers battled to a 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10 win over the number two seed Giants and improved to 18-14 overall with their sixth straight win.

With the win, Cabrini also earned the CSAC's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament, which is slated to begin next weekend.  The Blue and White will learn its tournament fate on Monday at 12:30pm, when the
NCAA Division III Selection Show is broadcast on NCAA.com.

Cabrini sophomore Emily Shannon was named the championship game Most Valuable Player after posting a monster double-double with a career high 22 kills and 17 digs.

Junior Anne-Marie ones recorded 11 kills, while senior Kelly Guarino and junior Chelsea Jones added eight each, one more than junior Kaylee Plisinski.

Freshman Emily Stokarski also notched a double-double, pairing 49 assists and 11 digs.

Guarino claimed team high honors with 27 digs, while sophomore Ashley Shannon notched 23.

Tonight's action could not get much closer, as the Cavaliers scored just three more total points than Keystone in a match that featured 29 ties and 13 lead changes.

Both teams kept the match close in the opening minutes of the first set before the Giants opened a 14-10. Cabrini responded with a 7-1 spurt but Keystone had an answer, building a 23-20 lead.

A Cabrini timeout refocused the team, as it claimed the first set 25-23 on five consecutive Keystone attack errors.

The second set remained close, as the teams tied 10 times in the set.  The final deadlock came at 16-16 before the Giants won the next three points and never looked back.

Keystone controlled the final minutes of the second frame, scoring six of the final seven points to even the match with a 25-19 second set victory.

After alternating points in the early going, the Blue and White build a 15-10 lead on an Anne-Marie Jones service ace.  The lead swelled to match high seven points before Keystone tried to mount a late rally.

Trailing 23-16, the Giants reeled off four of five points, before Chelsea Jones' kill ended the set at 25-19.

The Giants took the court for the fourth set on a mission, as they posted the first six points of the frame. Cabrini tried to rally, coming as close as 13-12, but Keystone continued to come up with a big play to regain the momentum and keep its lead, evening the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth.

For the first time since the 2012 championship match, the CSAC title game would be decided in a fifth set. The Cavaliers had gone five sets only once all season, while the Giants had gone the limit five times.

The team alternated points early, but with the score tied at 6-6, the Cavaliers took over.  The Blue and White scored five consecutive points to build a commanding 11-6 lead. A lone Keystone point interrupted eight straight Cabrini points, as the Cavaliers extended their lead to 14-7.

The Giants staved off three straight match points before Guarino ended the match with a kill.

Senior Hannah Zuchowski, sophomore Taylor Beatty and freshman Malley Bowen led Keystone (21-10) with double-doubles.  Zuchowski paired 15 kills and 16 digs, while Beatty notched 15 kills and 20 digs. Bowen added 40 assists and 24 digs in the loss.
