Game Recap: Basketball (Men) |

Men's Basketball Opens CSAC Play with Balanced Win over Rosemont

RADNOR, PA – Six Cavaliers scored at least nine points tonight, as the Cabrini men's basketball team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference play with an 88-75 win over Rosemont College tonight at Nerney Field House.  The victory improved the Cavaliers to 3-2 overall.

Junior Tyheim Monroe led the way with 23 points and 14 rebounds for his 32nd consecutive double-double, before fouling out late in the game.

Senior Ryan Charity posted 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.  Junior Chris Lawhorn added 13 points and five boards.

Cabrini's defense was one of the keys to tonight's win, as it recorded a season high 10 blocked shots and held Rosemont to 37.8% shooting from the field, including 0-18 from three point range.

Both teams used the opening minutes to feel each other out before Cabrini took control of the game with an early 12-1 spurt to build a 19-9 lead midway through the opening half. The lead swelled to 13 points on a pair of free throws by junior Deryl Bagwell, but the Ravens rallied late in the period.

Rosemont closed the half on a 14-6 run over the final 3:55, as sophomore Clayton Wolfe's lay-up cut the Raven's deficit to 39-35 at the break.

Despite leading for most of the half, the Cavaliers had not yet found their offensive rhythm, as they shot just 41.7% from the field, including 1-9 from three point range in the opening 20 minutes.

Cabrini seemed to find its touch during the break, as it scored on five of its first seven possessions of the second half.  Junior Joe Mostardi's three pointer capped a 10-2 run, extending the Blue and White cushion back to 12 points.

Try as they might, the Cavaliers could not pull away from a scrappy Rosemont club.  The Ravens chipped away at the Blue and White lead, pulling within five points twice, but Cabrini had an answer each time.

A fast break bucket cut Cabrini's lead to 72-68 with just under five minutes to play, but Monroe converted a pair of short jumpers in the paint to push the lead back to eight points.

The Cavaliers then sealed the win as Lawhorn and Charity connected on unlikely three pointers, pushing the lead back to 10 points with 93 seconds to play.

The Blue and White connected on 18-32 from the field in the second half, as Monroe went 9-10 after the break, pairing 19 points and eight boards after the break.

Bagwell finished the night with 12 points, while sophomore Ivan Robinson recorded 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.  Mostardi connected on three of his five three point attempts for nine points in the win.

Senior Jamier Hughes led Rosemont (2-3, 1-1 CSAC) went 13-16 from the free throw line en route to 27 points and 11 rebounds.  Classmate Kyle Lafferty added 14 points, while sophomore Tarrell Willis chipped in with 10 points off the bench.

Cabrini will look to build a win streak as it visits Marywood University (0-6, 0-2 CSAC) on Saturday. Game time is slated for 2pm in Scranton.
