Women's Basketball Closes Home Slate on High Note

RADNOR, Pa. – The seniors on the Cabrini women' sbasketball team made sure they made the most of their final regular season home game, as the quartet of Meghan Martin, Mo O'Connell, Dana Peterson and Kristina Startare led the Cavaliers to an 81-53 win over Centenary College tonight at Nerney Field House.

The win improves the Blue and White to 15-9 overall and 12-3 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.  With one game remaining in the regular season, Cabrini is tied with Neumann for the third seed in next week's postseason tournament and holds the tie breaker by virtue of its 82-46 win over the Knights in January.

Martin paced the Cabrini offense with 20 points on 7-12 shooting, including 4-6 from three point range.  O'Connell made the most out of her first career start, as the senior scored a career high 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second career double-double.

Startare paired nine points, eight boards, four assists and a career best five steals, while Peterson chipped in with four points and three rebounds.

Prior to tip, the Cavaliers honored the four seniors, who earned their 87th victory tonight, most of any class in program history.  The group led the Blue and White to three consecutive CSAC titles with a 59-4 conference record and scored the program's first NCAA Tournament victory.

As a group, they have amassed 2,039 points, 1,153 rebounds and 628 assists in their 389 appearances in the Blue and White.

The Cavaliers controlled the action from the opening tip, as it held Centenary to just two field goals in the first quarter.  The Cyclones grabbed an early 4-2 lead before Cabrini reeled off 13 consecutive points and never looked back.

Cabrini forced seven turnovers and made 10 trips the free throw line in the opening 10 minutes, as it built a 21-8 lead after the first quarter.

Cabrini showed no let-up in the second quarter, opening the frame on a 13-4 run, culminating with Martin's coast to coast lay-up that extended the lead to 34-12.  The lead grew to 23 on a three pointer by sophomore Kate Skalski on the Cavaliers' next possession.  Freshman Nomi Washington added the final five points of the half, as the Blue and White carried a 46-22 lead into the break.

The Cavaliers kept their collective foot on the pedal after the half, as their lead swelled to 53-25 when Startare found Martin for a triple at the 7:24 mark.  The Cyclones pulled within 56-37 before the Blue and White closed the third quarter on a 7-0 run to push its cushion to 63-38.

The run continued into the final period, as Martin and Startare scored the first five points of the fourth quarter for a game high 68-38 lead.

The Cabrini defense stymied one of the CSAC's top shooting clubs, holding Centenary 10 points below its season and 70 points below its average field goal percentage.  The Blue and White forced 26 Cyclone turnovers and converted them into 29 points, with 14 coming in the first quarter.

Washington finished the night with 11 points and matched Startare with five steals.  Skalski hit 3-6 from beyond the three point line for nine points.

Sophomore Julia Presant led the Cyclones (13-11, 8-7 CSAC) with 12 points off the bench, while junior Mallory George paired nine points and a team high six boards.

The Cavaliers will close their regular season on Saturday, as they head south to Baltimore to meet Notre Dame of Maryland University (8-16, 4-11 CSAC).  Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
