RADNOR, Pa. – Cabrini and Gwynedd Mercy played one of the best games of the year today at Nerney Field House, one that featured nine ties and 12 lead changes. But after 40 minutes, the Cavaliers found themselves on the short side of a 90-87 result in today's regular season finale.
The loss drops the Cavaliers to 15-10 on the season, including 13-5 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. By virtue of today's action, the Blue and White have clinched a home game in Monday's opening round of the CSAC Tournament.
As the number three seed, Cabrini will host sixth seeded Immaculata (10-15, 9-9 CSAC) on Monday at 8 p.m. The clubs split their two games this season, with the Mighty Macs claiming an 84-64 win in December, while the Cavaliers scored an 83-72 win in early February.
Today's game also marked the final regular season home appearance for the Cavaliers' lone senior
Ace Henry. The senior, who played in his 50th game in the Blue and White today, was one of four Cavaliers in double figures, posting 13 points.
Freshman
Ivan Robinson led the Blue and White with 26 points, including 5-7 from three point range. The rookie also added a career high eight rebounds and six assists, while playing all 40 minutes.
Junior
Ryan Charity posted 16 points off the bench, while sophomore
Tyheim Monroe recorded his 25th consecutive double-double, pairing 12 points and 13 rebounds. Classmate
Jair Green chipped in with nine points, seven boards, three blocked shots and three steals.
The Blue and White jumped to an early lead, as Hebry's three pointer capped a 7-0 run that broke a 9-9 dead lock. After watching Cabrini's lead grow to nine points, GMercyU used a 7-0 spurt of its own to cut its deficit to 25-23, but three straight triples and a pair of free throws pushed the cushion to a game high 13 points with 7:21 left in the frame.
The Cavaliers did not led the Griffins come within nine points for the remainder of the period, as junior Cedric Elleby's lay-up pulled GMercyU to within 49-40 at the break.
Cabrini came out of the locker room flat and GMercyU took advantage, opening the second half with a 13-5 run, cutting its deficit to 54-53.
For the next 11 minutes, the action went back and forth and the score remained within one possession, as the span featured six ties and nine lead changes. The game's final lead change came with 5:22 to play, as GMercyU senior Aaron Morgan's lay-up sparked a decisive 6-0 run.
While the Blue and White kept its deficit within one possession, a three pointer in the corner by the Griffins' Brian Hennessy proved to be the dagger, as it put GMercyU ahead 86-80 with 2:06 on the clock.
The Griffins connected on just 4-7 from the free throw line in the final 28 seconds, giving Cabrini a final chance. A Robinson three pointer and a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds pulled the Blue and White to within 89-87 with four seconds on the clock.
GMErcyU senior Darnell Artis split a pair of free throws but Cabrini's three point attempt came just after the final buzzer.
After holding the Griffins to just south of 42% shooting in the first half, including 3-12 from three point range, the Cavaliers saw GMercyU knock down 18-33 in the second half, including 8-15 from three point range.
Six Griffins scored in double figures, led by junior Cedric Elleby, who paired 20 points and 15 boards. Hennessy finished with 19 for GMercyU (19-6, 17-1 CSAC), while a trio of Griffins notched 12 points.
