No. 15 Men's Lacrosse Opens Season with 12-6 Victory

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The No. 15 Cabrini men's lacrosse team opened its 2016 campaign with a balanced effort in today's 12-6 victory at Haverford College.

Seven Cavaliers marked the scoring column in today's season-opening victory, led by freshman Jordan Krug, who netted three goals on six shots in his debut.  Senior Ethan Heisman and freshman Timmy Brooks paired two goals and an assist each, while junior Evan Downey tallied a pair of goals.

Sophomore James Magnani notched a goal and a helper, while sophomore Josh Moore and rookie Sean Wagner scored a goal each.

Freshman Riley White earned his first career start, recording seven saves in 45 minutes to seal the victory.  Sophomore Tyler Morrell added four fourth quarter stops.

The Cavaliers recorded 36 shots on the day, with 24 on target.  Brooks attempted a game high 11 shots, while Magnani and Heisman fired five each.  

Downey and sophomore Joey Hoey earned team high honors with four groundballs each.  Senior Dan Hopson anchored the Cavaliers' defensive effort with three caused turnovers, one more than classmate Brian Kittredge and junior Steve Halko.

Sophomore Riley Michaels went 5-8 at the faceoff spot, while classmate Joe Simpson won four of his 12 changes.

The Blue and White fell behind early, as the Fords notched the season's first goal less than 2:30 into the game.  The Cavaliers responded at the 9:19 mark as Heisman found Moore for the score.  Haverford scored two goals in 45 seconds late in the first quarter, sandwiched around Heisman's unassisted tally to take a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Cabrini wasted little time evening the score, as Brooks' first goal came 40 seconds into the second quarter.  Just 40 seconds later, the rookie found Magnani for the Cavaliers' first lead of the day.  Downey's goal extended the lead at the 6:14 mark before Krug completed his hat trick in the final 4:02 of the second quarter.

Haverford posted a man-up goal to pull within 8-4 just over five minutes into the third quarter, but the Blue and White notched three consecutive goals on unassisted scores by Heisman, Wagner and Brooks to expand its lead to 11-4.  The Fords again found the back of the to close the frame, pulling within 11-5 after three quarters.

Downey's second goal of the afternoon came just under six minutes into the final period.

Six players scored for Haverford (0-41) led by sophomore Kevin Goshom, who paired a goal and an assist.  Fellow sophomore Max Ellils caused three turnovers, while senior goaltender Eric Caliendo notched 12 saves in the loss.

The Cavaliers have a few days to recover, as they will not return to action until Saturday's home opener.  The Blue and White will welcome No. 2 Lynchburg College (0-1) to Edith Robb Dixon Field at 1 p.m.
