Defense Seals Cavaliers' CSAC Tournament Win

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cavaliers' defensive intensity finally paid off in the fourth quarter, as the Cabrini women's basketball team outscored Rosemont 21-7 to seal tonight's 70-48 CSAC Tournament quarterfinal victory at Nerney Field House.

With the win, the Blue and White improve to 17-9 on the season and secure a spot in Wednesday's semifinal round.  Cabrini, the tournament's number three seed, will visit second seeded Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday, at a time to be determined.

The Cavaliers suffered a pair of losses to the Griffins, falling 64-52 at home and 55-53 on the road.

Senior Meghan Martin led a quartet of Cavaliers with at least eight points in tonight's win.  The senior posted 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals.  Senior Dana Peterson chipped in with 11 points, while freshman Nomi Washington added 11 points, five boards and three steals.

Neither team brought its shooting touch to the gym tonight, but the Blue and White relied on a dominant defensive and rebounding effort in the win.  The Cavaliers built a 63-48 rebound advantage, including a season high 36 offensive rebounds.

Cabrini also forced 22 Rosemont turnovers, which it turned into 22 points.  Fifteen of the turnovers came via steal, as senior Kristina Startare joined Martin and Washington with three steals.

Despite shooting just 3-19 in the opening 10 minutes, the Cavaliers used a 7-4 run late in the period to build a 14-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Blue and White created a bit more of a cushion in the second quarter, as its lead swelled to 32-22 on Washington's coast to coach lay-up at the 1:48 mark. The Ravens pulled to within seven points before Peterson tallied the final three points of the frame to send the Cavaliers to the half with a 37-27 lead.

Cabrini maintained its double figure lead for much of the third quarter, extending it to 44-31 when Startare found Martin for a three pointer midway through the quarter.  Rosemont would not go away, cutting its deficit to seven points with 62 seconds left in the period.

The Cavaliers' defensive pressure took over in the fourth quarter, as Rosemont hit just two field goals in the final 10 minute quarter, scoring just seven points in the frame.  Martin's three points and lay-up in consecutive possessions extended the Cabrini lead to 58-43 with 5:45 left in the game.

Senior Mo O'Connell paired eight points and nine rebounds.  Startare finished the night with five points, nine rebounds, four assists to go with her three steals, while sophomore Sabrina Hackendorn secured eight boards.

Sophomore Jasmyn Parker and senior Carly Hislop led Rosemont (13-13) with nine points each, while Hislop grabbed 11 boards.  Sophomore Leilani Naone-Carter paired seven points and seven rebounds.
